Tagamanent combines a monumental hilltop complex with the landscape of Montseny Natural Park. The site of national cultural interest (BCIN) lies in the western part of the park. Cultural history, an ethnological museum and local festival traditions offer different points of focus for planning your trip.
Hilltop Cultural Heritage
The monumental complex includes the Church of Santa Maria, a cemetery, the ruins of the rectory, a square, the former town hall and the remains of an inn. Tagamanent Castle has been documented since 945. It is a separate historical landmark alongside the hilltop complex.
The present-day Church of Santa Maria de Tagamanent was rebuilt after the 1448 earthquake and extensively remodeled between 1578 and 1619. The hilltop complex was burned down and abandoned in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. The dates refer to different events: 945 to the documented mention of the castle, 1448 and 1578 to 1619 to the history of the church, and 1936 to the destruction and abandonment of the complex.
Access to the Hill and Views
The access path to the hill begins at the El Bellver information point and runs between cultivated terraces to Coll de Sant MartĂ. The current route is considered a walking trail accessible to everyone, offering panoramic views across the Congost Valley towards the Mediterranean. The starting point, terraces and destination give you clear directions for the walk; the views connect the hilltop visit with the wider landscape.
Casa Museu L'AgustĂ
On the Pla de la Calma, Casa Museu L'AgustĂ, an ethnological museum, offers insight into rural life in this part of Montseny in the mid-19th century. The exhibition includes cattle and sheep stalls, the kitchen, the baking area, the dining room for special occasions and the bedrooms. An audiovisual presentation complements the account of life in the farmhouse and on the Pla de la Calma.
Guided visits are currently unavailable for technical reasons. If a guided tour is important to your visit, check in advance whether they are being offered again. The museum's content covers both the living quarters and areas used for agricultural work, presenting different aspects of everyday life at the time.
Main Festival and Aplec
The Aplec de festa major de Tagamanent is held on the second Sunday in September. It includes a mass and a poetry reading at the Church of Santa Maria de Tagamanent. Afterwards, there is a discussion at Mas l'AgustĂ, a communal meal, a raffle, and a concert with dancing. The traditional program may vary from year to year; if you plan to attend the Aplec, check the dates and activities for that year's event.
The Festa Major de Tagamanent has been celebrated since around 1979. It includes a craft market, a communal dinner, a concert and activities for children. The annual program may vary here too. The two festival descriptions offer different pointers for planning: the Aplec recurs on the second Sunday in September, while the activities at the Festa Major may change from one year to the next.
Montseny Landscape and Local Cuisine
A large part of the municipality of Tagamanent lies within Montseny Natural Park. This means the historic cultural heritage is set amid diverse flora, fauna and landscapes. Tagamanent's cultural heritage also includes medieval churches and chapels. Here, historical themes meet a protected landscape, without nature and buildings being treated as a single sightseeing destination.
At El Bellver, a tasting menu is offered featuring local products, produce from local gardens, homemade bread and wine from the farm. You can tailor your trip to your interests: the hill and its complex, rural everyday life at Casa Museu, or a visit centered on the Aplec tradition in September. This lets you explore Tagamanent with a clear focus, without having to turn its individual places and events into a fixed route.
