Churches spanning several centuries, historic water sites, an annual festival and routes through vineyards give Sant Llorenç d'Hortons a variety of ways to shape a stay. Those wishing to combine culture and landscape can explore the town’s architectural history alongside a walking route and—if the dates work out—Terrazel. For planning, it is helpful to note the fixed festival date, possible changes to the event programme and trail conditions, which should be checked locally.
Churches and historical layers
The church of Sant Llorenç d'Hortons was first documented in 945. The present church building was constructed between 1845 and 1847. It has a single-nave layout, a semicircular apse and side chapels between the buttresses. The bell tower is square, with an octagonal upper section. The dates mark two different points in time: the church’s earliest documentation and the construction of the present building.
Traces of the earlier Romanesque church have also survived: remains can be seen inside the Rectoria de Sant Llorenç d'Hortons. The Romanesque church of Sant Joan Samora, documented since 1080 and well preserved, is also part of the town’s history. Traces of stone quarrying can still be seen at the Pedrera romana de la Rierussa.
Water sites with different functions
The present appearance of La Bassa Gran dates from its renovation in 1911. The site includes a fountain and a basin with design features influenced by the Modernisme style. Historically, La Bassa Gran combined a fountain, an irrigation basin and a facility used as a washhouse; in summer, it was a popular meeting place. The site’s history shows how a water facility could serve practical purposes while also functioning as a meeting place.
Another historic water facility is located in Parc de Cal Sant Just. The fountain and covered washhouse there were built in the early 19th century. In the past, surplus water was used to irrigate nearby gardens. The washhouse is part of this historical context; its former irrigation function is a separate feature.
Terrazel on 10 August
Terrazel takes place every year on 10 August as the central performance of the Festa Major of Sant Llorenç d'Hortons. The festival was created and is performed by local residents. A street festival, Terrazel features animal figures, giant figures, large masks, music and fire. The performance prompts reflection on the destruction of the environment.
The fixed annual date makes it easier to plan around, but individual programme items may change. If you want to plan your trip around Terrazel, check the event details for that year in advance.
Trails, vineyards and geology
The Camí de la Garnatxa reaches Sant Llorenç d'Hortons and joins the GR 5 at the entrance to the town. The GR-S route runs from Sant Llorenç d'Hortons through vineyards, crosses a river and follows a wooded ridge with farmhouses. For the Camí de la Garnatxa, the link to the GR 5 is a notable landmark; the GR-S route is defined by its sequence of vineyards, river crossing and ridge. Check trail conditions locally.
The Salt de La Pedrera waterfall is about 15 metres high. Its geological surroundings include Miocene marine sediments and marine fossils. Dense vegetation prevents access to the streambed; take this limitation into account when planning.
Wine country and local products
At Celler St Joannes, the Casa Gran dates back to 1453. The Romanesque hermitage of Sant Joan Bautista stands beside it. It was built in the 11th century and expanded in the 13th and 14th centuries. At Celler St Joannes, you can walk to the vineyards and enjoy views of Montserrat. Historic buildings stand alongside a clearly stated connection to the landscape: the walk to the vineyards and the view of Montserrat.
Local products from Sant Llorenç d'Hortons include wine, oil, cava, ceramics and painting. Cellar visits and pairing experiences are also available. Participating producers and experiences may change, so check current offerings in advance. The town hall serves as a tourist information office; check the contact details before your visit.
