In Lučenec District, cultural heritage takes many forms: as a national cultural monument, as family memory, in museum collections, and in preserved or ruined architecture. Halič, Lučenec and Divín offer insights into different chapters of this history. Nature and everyday urban life add their own distinctive touches.

Castle and museum in Halič

Halič Castle is a national cultural monument. The Forgách family crypt in Halič is also one of the places where history is linked to specific people: it commemorates Antal Forgách and Johanna Forgách, whose final resting place it is. The castle and crypt thus represent two different ways of approaching cultural heritage—a significant building and the memory of a family.

Another perspective on Halič can be found at the Csontváry Museum. It presents the life and work of T. K. Csontváry and combines the exhibition with interactive multimedia elements, including large-screen projections, touchscreens, a hologram and a virtual potter’s wheel. The presentation therefore offers more than simply viewing works of art. Opening hours may vary; before your visit, also check what is currently on display.

Collections and city life in Lučenec

The Novohrad Museum and Gallery in Lučenec show how objects from different places and contexts come together in a collection. Exhibits include folk pottery from Halič and furniture from Halič Castle. These are joined by historical glassware from Lučenec and enamelware from the now-closed enamel works in Lučenec and Fiľakovo. Pottery and castle furniture sit alongside glass and enamel—different materials, each preserving its own traces of regional culture.

The restored synagogue in Lučenec also connects architectural history with present-day use: it serves as a multicultural space and offers expert explanations of the building’s history and restoration. Its architectural significance is also noteworthy: the synagogue was the last monumental work by the architect L. Baumhorn. Access conditions may vary by season, so check visiting options in advance.

The town market adds a glimpse of trade in agricultural produce to these cultural discoveries. Fruit, vegetables and other products are sold there in Lučenec. The selection depends on the season and changes throughout the year.

Discover castles and nature

Two different approaches are relevant when visiting Fiľakovo Castle: pedestrians can reach it from Podhradská Street, while vehicle access is via Baštová Street. If you are planning a visit, check the route again in advance.

Divín Castle has been a ruin since its destruction by imperial troops in 1679. Zichy Castle in Divín houses several exhibitions about the castle’s owners, hunting trophies and the history of mining. Confirm that the exhibitions are available before you travel.

The Šomoška National Nature Reserve offers a different perspective. It protects a basalt formation with hexagonal columnar joints, known as the “Stone Waterfall.” Many protected waterbird species breed at the Ružiná Reservoir. The range of natural features thus extends from striking rock formations to an important breeding site for waterbirds—two distinct aspects of nature that complement the historical discoveries.
