Ľuboreč lies in a flat valley of the Ľuboreč stream that widens into a basin. The extinct volcano Lysec, with its volcanic rock formations, the Tatárske pivnice and the works of art in the Evangelical church give the village distinct natural and historical points of interest. A memorial room also reflects the lives of Daniel Maróthy and Elena Maróthy Šoltésová.
Landscape between the valley, reservoir and Lysec
The Ľuboreč water reservoir covers 65.5 hectares. Lysec is located within the cadastral area of Ľuboreč and is an extinct volcano with volcanic rock formations. This gives the landscape three distinct points of reference: the shape of the valley, the reservoir’s surface and the volcanic rock at Lysec. Visitors looking to explore the area through its natural features will find a range of points of interest, rather than just one landscape motif.
Hiking trail and Tatárske pivnice
In the forest north of Ľuboreč are two artificial, cellar-like caves called the Tatárske pivnice. They are located about a kilometre beyond the village, on a blue-marked hiking trail to the summit of Lysec. The route thus connects a specific historical site with Lysec as a geological destination. This creates a clear thematic link for anyone wishing to explore the landscape and local history along the same trail.
According to the local historical account, residents used the Tatárske pivnice as hiding places during the period of Ottoman rule. This historical context gives the caves significance beyond their cellar-like form. As trail conditions can change seasonally, it is advisable to check current conditions before setting out.
Church art from two eras
The Evangelical church stands on a slight rise in the eastern part of Ľuboreč. Inside are Gothic wall paintings from the late 14th century, possibly dating to 1385. The main altar is Baroque and dates from 1722. The works allow visitors to compare late medieval wall painting with Baroque altar design; 1385 remains a possible date for the paintings.
The church’s location also provides a clear point of reference: it stands on a rise in the east of the village. In terms of art history, it is above all the different periods that distinguish the church interior. The wall paintings and altar do not belong to the same period, but represent two distinctly separated eras.
Biographies in the memorial room
A report dated November 2, 2025, describes a memorial room in Ľuboreč where Daniel Maróthy and Elena Maróthy Šoltésová are presented through preserved documents. The report also describes photographs of Elena and letters to her fellow writers Terézia Vansová and Božena Slančíková Timrava. The letters also offer insight into her connections with other women writers.
Elena Maróthy Šoltésová came to Ľuboreč at the age of six months and spent 20 years there. This long biographical connection firmly anchors the memorial room’s theme in the village. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to enquire about visiting arrangements in advance.
