Podrečany lies on the northern edge of the Lučenec Basin, along the banks of the Krivánsky potok. Two clear themes can help you plan your visit: the village’s architectural history and its hiking and cycling routes.

Buildings and Local History

The Podrečany manor house is designated as a cultural monument. Built in 1893 in the Secession style, following French models, it was integrated into a landscaped park. The single-storey building has a U-shaped floor plan, a loggia, a terrace and rich stucco ornamentation. Its architectural history includes not only the building itself but also its setting within the park.

The Roman Catholic Chapel of the Holy Trinity is a Baroque building dating from the 18th century. The Evangelical church was built between 1863 and 1866, after an original chapel was expanded in 1836 and demolished around 1862. Its furnishings include a Neoclassical altar and pulpit from the mid-19th century. Two bells add further historical layers: the larger one was cast in Budapest in 1890, and the smaller one in Trnava in 1923. The chapel, the church’s construction history and its furnishings reflect different periods and styles within the village.

The village’s history also includes a craft: in 1843, alongside farming, residents made pipes at home. This historical detail broadens the picture of Podrečany beyond its buildings and offers another glimpse into life at the time.

Landscape and Routes

The terrain around Podrečany ranges from 204 to 602 metres above sea level. The entire area faces southeast and is sheltered to the west by mountain ridges. The Krivánsky potok is another defining feature of the village’s setting.

A lake formed in a former magnesite mine as it flooded from 1998 onwards. It covers about 10 hectares and is around 97 metres deep; these measurements may have changed. Densely vegetated slopes surround the greenish water. Access to the lake is prohibited because of the risk of landslides, unsecured slopes, flooded mine tunnels and the very difficult approach to the water. Observe the access ban and keep away from the water.

The blue hiking trail No. 2632 Podrečany–Tuhár–Polichno–Bralce passes through Podrečany. The route is 18 kilometres long in total. Two cycling routes also pass through the village: the 117-kilometre Novohradská cycling route runs via Detva, Podkriváň, Divín and Lučenec. The blue Mučínska jaskyňa–Rapovce–Lučenec–Ružiná–(Látky) cycling route is 17 kilometres long. The 18-kilometre hiking trail and the 17-kilometre blue cycling route are separate routes; the Novohradská cycling route covers a considerably longer overall distance.

Hiking enthusiasts can also join organised ascents: Podrečany’s active tourist club regularly organises trips to Sedem chotárov. Another recurring event is the “O pohár starostu obce” volleyball tournament, held annually towards the end of the summer holidays. If you would like to plan your visit around this event, check the current date.

Getting There and Planning

Podrečany is connected to Lučenec by train and bus. Check the current timetable for specific departures. You can then plan your journey around the focus of your stay: the buildings and local history offer a different experience from the longer hiking and cycling routes.
