Fiľakovo combines a medieval castle in the city centre with local history, sacred architecture and natural surroundings on the edge of the Cerová vrchovina. When looking for a hotel in Fiľakovo, consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay: the castle and cultural heritage, or the landscape and hiking. Specific places to start include the educational trail on Castle Hill, the town museum, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with the adjoining Franciscan monastery, and the town park.

Fiľakovo Castle and the educational trail

The stone Fiľakovo Castle is in the city centre and was built on volcanic tuff. It is first mentioned in the mid-13th century. The 505-metre-long educational trail is within the castle grounds; five information boards cover the castle’s history, natural conditions and vegetation, the geological structure of Castle Hill, and the surrounding landscape.

Pedestrians can reach the castle via Podhradská Street, while vehicles can access it via Baštová Street. You can take these different entrances into account when planning your arrival.

City history at the museum and on the map

Since 1994, the Fiľakovo Town Museum has been housed in the local Reduta building, known as the Vigadó. Its permanent exhibition traces the town’s history from the destruction of the castle in 1682—or the resettlement of the small town—through to the 1960s. A separate room is dedicated to the traditions of the local enamel factory and to local industrial enterprises. The exhibition thus looks beyond the castle’s history to later chapters in the town’s development and industrial history.

For independent exploration, Fiľakovo’s digital guide provides information about around twenty historical sites via a map platform. It is free for visitors and lets you explore the town at your own pace, choosing which aspects of its history to focus on.

Church and Franciscan monastery

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was rebuilt as a single-nave church between 1694 and 1727, after its predecessor was destroyed by the Turks in 1544. The Franciscan monastery was built between 1699 and 1727. It is a two-storey building with three wings and a central courtyard; it adjoins the church on its northwest side. For centuries, the Franciscans shaped the spiritual life of Fiľakovo and remain closely connected with the town to this day. The church and monastery offer different architectural forms while also forming a clear historical connection.

Landscape and town park

Fiľakovo lies on the edge of the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area, which offers opportunities to explore nature and go hiking. Castle Hill is part of this protected area in places. Rare, protected trees grow in the town park, which offers visitors a place to relax and is home to a renovated zoo. Hiking and exploring nature are therefore options alongside the castle and city history when choosing what interests you.
