Kamenica lies on both sides of the Lužnica; its riverside setting and historic settlement pattern define the village. A hiking route starts here and passes several named points before reaching Brezna. The wider area also offers a variety of destinations, including Potpeće Cave, the Old Town of Užice fortress, the National Museum of Užice and the Kadinjača Memorial Complex. This gives you two distinct focal points for planning your trip: a specific hiking route and individual natural and cultural attractions.

River and settlement pattern

The terrain around Kamenica is hilly, with some level ground along the river and wooded areas as well. The houses stand on higher ground, away from the river. The Duboko stream runs along the southern side of Kamenica. Historically, Kamenica consisted of two parts separated by the Lužnica: Belotić lay on the left bank and Kamenica on the right. Kamenica’s present-day position on both banks and the historic names of its two parts describe different aspects of the village’s layout. The river is both a landscape feature and the dividing line between the former parts of the village.

Hiking route and nearby destinations

A hiking route used by the local mountaineering club starts in Kamenica, passes through Orlovac, Ravni sto and the Nilovska Pass, reaches Usovica at 1,375 metres and ends in Brezna. The named points and endpoint make the route clear: Kamenica is the starting point and Brezna is the destination. The hike can therefore be considered a trip in its own right, separate from individual attractions in the surrounding area.

Potpeće Cave is an underground visitor attraction in the Užice area and lies within the wider surroundings of Kamenica. Also nearby is the medieval Old Town of Užice fortress, perched on a steep rock above the Đetinja. Historical attractions also include the National Museum of Užice and its exhibitions, as well as the monumental Kadinjača Memorial Complex. The route, with its defined start and endpoint, is distinct from the individual cave, fortress, museum and memorial sites: when planning your trip, you can focus either on the route or on a historical attraction.

Historical traces of the village

A livestock census from 1596 records Kamenica on the course of the Lužnica in the municipality of Užice, with 275 sheep. The earliest families to migrate there arrived in the second half of the 18th century. The Antonijević family is considered the earliest migrant family; it came from Kosatica in Polimlje. Pop Antonije served as a priest at Bela Crkva.

The histories of other families also connect Kamenica with a range of places of origin. The Đokanović family came from Piva and supplied several priests and monks to Kamenica and surrounding villages. The Kovačević and Polić families trace their arrival to Kratovo; the Kovačević first came to Kamenica as masons. The Vasović family, also known as Koturović, came from Osat in Bosnia. The Trnavac family in Kamenica originated in Trnava, in the historic region of Stari Vlah. An operations report dated 2 December 1914 assigns Kamenica to the Čemernica–Kamenica defence group of the Šumadija Division, II Reserve.
