Mitrovac is one of Tara’s two tourist centres and one of the largest high plateaus in the Tara Mountains. The area lies at about 1,080 metres above sea level. If you are considering Mitrovac as a place to stay, you can make your choice based on specific local interests: National Park information, a moorland reserve and nature trail, as well as hiking and cycling options.
Visitor Centre and Trailhead
The Tara National Park Visitor Centre opened in 2006 and covers 220 m². It houses an information point, a souvenir shop, exhibitions and a lecture hall with 40 seats. The starting point for hiking trails in the Mitrovac area is at the intersection by the Visitor Centre. This intersection therefore serves both as a reference point for an information visit and as the starting point for the trails.
Crveni potok and Tepih Livada
The Crveni potok Nature Reserve is located in Mitrovac, in the central part of Tara National Park. The moor is home to a unique relict forest community of Pančić spruce. The reserve also preserves a rainforest-like forest of spruce, fir, alder and Pančić spruce. Crveni potok is therefore defined both by its distinctive forest and by a specific trail through the moor.
The 550-metre “Tepih Livada” walking and nature trail passes through the forest moor to its central area, which is also called Tepih Livada. The terrain is flat and equipped with information and educational panels. The name therefore refers both to the trail and to the area it leads to through the moor. Access to the moor is controlled. The platform at Tepih Livada is used for field demonstrations accompanied by authorised Tara National Park staff; visitor numbers there are limited to 20 people. Take these conditions into account when planning your visit.
Cycling Route and September Event
The Zlatibor–Mokra Gora–Mitrovac cycling route is about 48 kilometres long and has around 3,600 metres of total ascent. Another option for cycling enthusiasts is the “Wild Bear” race: it takes place every September in Tara National Park and consists of three stages. Each stage starts and finishes in Mitrovac. This means there is a designated cycling route and a recurring annual event to choose from for different kinds of plans. If you want to plan your trip around the race, check the date for the relevant year.
Getting There and Winter Conditions
The road distance to Mitrovac via Bajina Bašta and Perućac is listed as 27 kilometres. Road conditions can change, so check the route before setting out. Mitrovac has cold winters. The average snow cover is about one metre deep and lasts for around 100 days a year. These figures provide seasonal guidance but are not a forecast for specific travel dates. For a particular winter visit, you should therefore check the latest weather information.
