The local history of Nikojevići is reflected in sacred sites, memorial markers, and a reference to the cooper’s craft clearly placed in time. The memorial markers are spread across a chapel, cemetery, street, and path. The location of Žunska Cave and public bus route 17A are also useful for finding your way around, but each comes with its own travel-planning considerations.
Chapel, Temple, and Memorial Sites
The Temple of Saint Kyriakos the Hermit is located in Nikojevići. The Chapel of Saint Kyriakos the Hermit was built as a memorial foundation in honor of Antonije J. Žunić. A krajputaš dedicated to Bogdan Žunić is set into its southwest wall; there are also monuments to participants in the wars of 1912 to 1918 by the chapel.
There are also monuments to participants in these wars at the Ponjavića Cemetery in the Planđište area of the Nikojevići local community. A krajputaš dedicated to Ranko Terzić is located on Svetosavska Street in Nikojevići. Another krajputaš, dedicated to Veselin Ćetković, stands on the right side of the path from the chapel to the school. Memorial markers are therefore identified in several places: by the chapel, in the cemetery, on a street, and along the path to the school.
Their locations distinguish the different forms of commemoration: one krajputaš is set into a chapel wall, while others are associated with a street or path; the monuments to war participants are by the chapel and in the cemetery. There is also a difference in whom they commemorate: individual krajputaši honor people identified by name, while the monuments are dedicated to participants in the wars of 1912 to 1918.
The Cave and Getting There
Žunska Cave lies on the border between Kriva Reka and the hamlet of Nikojevići. It has not been prepared for tourist visits. If you are considering a visit, check the visiting conditions in advance, as they may change. When planning, it is therefore important not to assume that the cave’s location means it has been developed for tourism.
Public bus route 17A runs between Ribar, Bela Zemlja, and Nikojevići. If you would like to take this service into account when planning your journey, check the timetable for your travel dates: service may change. This lets you factor the bus route into your plans without assuming the timetable will remain unchanged.
A Historical Look at the Craft
In the early 1920s, 17 households in Nikojevići practiced the cooper’s craft. This figure shows that the craft was not practiced only occasionally at the time, but was found in multiple households. Together with the memorial markers, it offers another perspective on the village: alongside commemorations of individuals and war participants, there was also a historic craft.
The dates help distinguish these topics. The monuments relate to the wars of 1912 to 1918; the cooper’s craft dates to the early 1920s. The memorial sites and the history of work can thus be understood as related but distinct topics in the local history.
