Požega combines railway history and culture with outdoor and water-based recreation. This gives you different ways to plan your visit: you can focus on the railway connection and the town’s history, or take your cue from the leisure activities on offer. When choosing a hotel in Požega, it helps to first consider which of these aspects of the town you want to shape your stay.

Railway history and connections

Požega is the largest railway junction on the Belgrade–Bar line and has a branch line towards Stalać. The railway network is therefore a distinctive part of the town’s identity. There is also a specific point of interest for railway history: the Railway Museum in Požega is next to the new railway station, about one kilometre from the town centre.

On 12 April 1990, the narrow-gauge railway section of the Railway Museum in Belgrade opened in Požega. This brings two different perspectives together: Požega’s place in the railway network and the history of narrow-gauge railways. If rail travel is important for your journey, check the timetable for your travel dates.

Culture in the townscape and at festivals

For 190 years, the circular square has been an important landmark of the town. It includes a memorial fountain made of white stone. The fountain’s round shape and material give the square a distinctive appearance, without the need for any single cultural programme to be the main focus.

The Požega City Gallery offers a different cultural perspective. It was established in 1999 at the Požega Cultural Centre; prominent names from the contemporary art scene have exhibited there. While the square as a landmark shapes the townscape, the gallery points to Požega’s institutional art history.

The festivals add their own distinctive touches. The international children’s music festival “I am your friend” takes place in September in the cinema hall of the Požega Sports and Cultural Centre. The Požezija poetry and music festival brings together poets and musicians from across Serbia and gives all authors the opportunity to present themselves to audiences in Požega. You can use September as a guide for the children’s music festival; Požezija combines poetry and music with the presentation of authors. Check the exact festival dates if you would like to plan your trip around them.

Parkland, sports and water

Borjak is a park with a pine forest and walking paths. The walking paths in the Borjak recreation centre add up to 480 metres; there are also three sports courts and an outdoor fitness area. The length of the paths gives you a clear idea of how far you can walk. The sports courts and fitness area offer additional opportunities for outdoor exercise.

Gradski bazen offers a different combination. The children’s pool is 40 centimetres deep and has water attractions. The main pool is Olympic-sized, with water depths of 130 and 180 centimetres; there are also courts for sand sports. The pools therefore differ in size and depth, while the sand-sports courts provide another way to stay active.

Planning your stay

When choosing a hotel in Požega, you can start by deciding what matters most for your trip: the railway junction and museum, the square and gallery, or outdoor activities in Borjak and at Gradski bazen. These themes appeal to different interests and do not all need to be packed into a single, busy itinerary. If a festival is the deciding factor, plan around the specific dates; if you are travelling by rail, check the timetables for your travel dates.
