In the center of Bajina Bašta, all the streets intersect at right angles in the town center; the urban layout dates from 1882. On the Drina, a beach lies right next to the bridge to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Drina runs along the northwestern and northern sides of the municipality for 60 kilometers and is the most important river on its municipal boundary. The town center and riverbank thus provide two concrete reference points for finding your way around the town and municipality.

Water on the river and lakes

Several large boats operated by the Tara–Drina Tourism Organization give visitors the chance to travel down the Drina; they are piloted by experienced kayakers. Kayaking is also available on Zovinsko jezero on Mount Tara and on Lake Perućac; trips down the Drina are possible as well. The options can be distinguished by body of water and format: kayaking on the lakes, trips down the river, or a boat trip on the Drina.

The House on the Drina is a landmark of Bajina Bašta, known in Serbia as Zelenika and one of the river’s and the Podrinje region’s best-known landmarks.

Cyrillic script and an excursion to Rača Monastery

The Cyrillic Park is in the center of Bajina Bašta and is the region’s first theme park dedicated to the Serbian script. This dedication adds a distinct cultural point of reference to the right-angled urban layout of 1882.

Rača Monastery is six kilometers from Bajina Bašta and is considered to have been founded by King Dragutin Nemanjić in the 13th century. Nearby, an easy two-kilometer educational trail called “Račana” begins at the monastery, near archaeological sites. It leads through beech forest along the river to the waterfalls of the Lađevac thermal spring. The route thus combines a waterside destination with forest and an archaeological point of interest at its starting point.

Cycling routes and events

There are currently three developed and signposted cycling routes in the Tara Mountains. They follow existing forest and public roads and can also be used as hiking trails. For the fifth “Ćirilična biciklijada,” announced for August 30, 2026, a 13-kilometer circular route between the Cyrillic Park, Rača Monastery and the Cyrillic Museum was planned; 6.5 kilometers were indicated for each direction. The distances therefore represent two different formats: the easy two-kilometer educational trail and the 13-kilometer circular route planned for the Biciklijada.

Bašta Fest is an annual short live-action film festival in Bajina Bašta and takes place every July. The Drina Regatta is considered the oldest tourist and recreational event on the Drina.
