In Cabeção, churches, chapels and other historic places tell the story of different chapters in the town’s history. They are joined by a protected landscape, trails with specified distances and wine-related experiences. Visitors planning a stay can choose from architectural history, nature and regional culture.

Churches and Architectural History

The Brotherhood of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Cabeção was founded in the last years of the 16th century. Its church was built in 1600 with the permission of the Archbishop of Évora, D. Teotónio de Bragança, and consecrated that year. In the Igreja da Misericórdia de Cabeção, incomplete Luso-Roman mosaic floors, attributed to the 5th century AD, are also on display.

An earlier historical landmark is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação, which was already in existence in 1279. The Ermida de São Salvador do Mundo was built in the 14th century; its Gothic portal has survived since its construction. In the Capela do Senhor dos Passos, gilded woodcarvings and a rounded ceiling meet in a transitional style between Rococo and Neoclassicism. Together, these buildings show a range of historical and artistic influences rather than belonging to just one period.

The Torrinha do Castelo, also known as Torre da Laranjinha, is a small chapel with a square floor plan and four arches. According to tradition, it is connected with the origins of Vila de Cabeção. The Antigo Teatro da Vila de Cabeção retains many of its original features and is considered a notable example of Portuguese Art Nouveau architecture. It is believed to have been built between 1914 and 1915 and was formerly also known as Teatro-Cine. The Pelourinho de Cabeção combines civic architecture with Baroque and revivalist elements: after the original pillory was destroyed in 1874, it was rebuilt in 1961.

Places of Everyday Life and Remembrance

The Tanques da Vila de Cabeção are also part of the town’s history. Built in 1930, the facilities were a social meeting place reserved exclusively for women: several washerwomen would gather there to do laundry and spend time together. The Fonte Velha is in Cabeção’s oldest district, where the Vila’s first residents settled.

The Centro Cultural de Cabeção houses the headquarters of the Grupo de Cantares de Cabeção and the Grupo Recreativo; classes for the Universidade Sénior de Mora are also held there. A multipurpose room is set aside for exhibitions and colloquiums. The Museu Casa António Vaz e Albertina Moreira preserves furniture and decorations crafted by António Vaz and Albertina Moreira in their family home. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

Nature and Trail Distances

The Mata Nacional de Cabeção is part of the Natura 2000 network and covers more than 258 hectares. The Parque Ecológico do Gameiro was established at the Açude do Gameiro on the Rio Raia. It includes a picnic area and a recreation zone; check what is currently available before visiting.

Two sections of different lengths are marked along the Passadiço or Percurso do Gameiro: the riverside section is 2,930 metres long, and the Montado section is 2,570 metres. Of the riverside section, 1,500 metres are a wooden boardwalk and 1,430 metres are a path. These figures clarify the trail’s layout without treating the two sections as the same length.

The Pista Internacional de Pesca Desportiva de Cabeção offers a different kind of measurement. It stretches for about three kilometres and has a total of 190 fishing spots: 125 on the two-kilometre-long Pista Velha and 65 on the one-kilometre-long Pista Nova. The venue has also hosted numerous world championships. At the Pista, the focus is on section lengths and the number of spots, while the Gameiro route is divided into riverside and Montado sections.

Wine and Further Discoveries

Adega do Teso offers guided cellar tours with wine tastings and regional snacks. During the grape harvest, it welcomes groups by appointment; this option is seasonal. Check the current arrangements when planning a visit. The Rota das Adegas also brings wine and culture together: at its 29th edition in January 2026, participants were taken to between four and seven wine cellars, depending on the route they chose. There, they could learn about each cellar’s history, see the traditional Vinho de Talha production process up close and taste the wine with regional snacks. Check the event dates for future editions. The production of Vinho de Talha is listed in Portugal’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In Mora, the Fluviário de Mora opened in 2007 as a scientific, cultural and leisure facility focused on freshwater environments. Its presentation follows an Iberian river from source to mouth and includes a range of habitats and freshwater species. This adds a distinct perspective on rivers and their habitats to the architectural and landscape themes.
