The Museu Interactivo do Megalitismo is conveniently located in the centre of Vila Mora and gives the town an archaeological focus. Three areas across 750 square metres of exhibition space are dedicated to everyday life, death and contemplation. Interactive tables provide information about the exhibits, including some that are more than 6,000 years old, and explain how excavations are carried out. This means the focus is not only on the objects, but also on the methods used to discover them. If you are interested in megalithic culture, the museum combines viewing the objects with insights into excavation work.
Churches, Buildings and History
The Torre do Relógio is part of a 16th-century building that once housed Mora’s municipal administration. Today, the building is home to the Mora Tourist Office and the town library. The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Graça dates from 1570; its architecture reflects religious, Manueline and Neoclassical influences. The church also contains a baptismal font from the late 16th century. These details provide two chronological reference points for the building’s history: the year the church was built and the age of a specific furnishing.
The Igreja de Santo António de Mora also tells a story of long-term use: it was built in 1656 and served as a pilgrims’ chapel. Its architectural features include a nave, chancel, bell tower and sacristy. The Igreja da Misericórdia de Mora was inaugurated in 1581, three years after the Misericórdia brotherhood was founded in 1575. Its bell points to an even earlier time: it comes from the former Convento de S. Bento de Castris in Évora and dates to 1391. Those interested in historic buildings will find varied stories here about religious institutions, architecture and individual furnishings.
Another landmark in the historic centre is Praça Central Conselheiro Fernando de Sousa. It commemorates the arrival of the railway in Mora in 1908. This is a reminder of a historical event, not a statement about rail services today. It also offers a way to explore the town’s history beyond its churches and older buildings.
Culture and Leisure in Town
Casa da Cultura de Mora brings together several cultural facilities and activities: a library, exhibition gallery, cinema and theatre, music school, municipal dance school and decorative arts courses. This offers a different way to engage with culture than exploring archaeological objects or historic buildings. Visitors can learn about and take part in the creative process through the experience “JVC – Por onde a madeira me leva”. The experience “Vista o Fato de Apicultor” includes collecting honey and bottling it to take home. Alongside viewing exhibitions, visitors can enjoy practical and creative activities.
Views and Nature
The Miradouro de Mora is on the upper edge of Bairro da MisericĂłrdia, at one of the highest points in Vila Mora. It offers far-reaching views of waterways, irrigated fields and a wide variety of wild plants and animals. The viewpoint draws attention to the landscape and nature, while the museum and historic buildings highlight other subjects. These different focuses may be important when making your choice: archaeological exhibitions and architectural history on the one hand, and landscape views and nature observation on the other.
Green Spaces and Sport Fishing
Jardim Público de Mora has green spaces, a sports area, a bar, toilets, spectator stands, a children’s playground and a lake. Parque Urbano de Mora is a shared green space with leisure and sports facilities. The two places thus offer different features for outdoor recreation, without needing to be linked by a particular route.
For sport fishing, Pista Internacional de Pesca Desportiva de Mora is a dedicated destination. It is set in natural surroundings on Ribeira da Raia, near Vila de Mora, and extends for approximately one kilometre. The facility has 60 fishing spots. The water depth ranges from two to four metres, and the bed has gravel and sandy areas. Its length, number of spots, depth range and bed composition offer specific details about the facility if sport fishing is one of your travel interests.
