At the Faux de Verzy, nature conservation and exploration go hand in hand: the trees are located in a Réserve biologique dirigée, where active conservation measures are carried out. An easy 3-kilometre discovery trail is also accessible to families with pushchairs and people with reduced mobility. This makes it possible to experience the special significance of this natural area on a walk.
Forest trails and navigation around Verzy
A trail through the Verzy Biological Reserve managed by the ONF is also described as easy and has no steep inclines. The Parking des Faux is on the RD34 between Verzy and Louvois. To explore the remarkable trees and conservation work at the site, the ONF-Découvertes app offers archive material, old postcards and interviews. The circular trail, ONF trail and car park are distinct points of reference: the car park details locate it by the road, while the trail descriptions characterise the routes themselves.
Beyond the forest, Marne offers a range of nature-related experiences. Hiking routes pass through the regional nature park and along canals. Lake Der is a destination for nature and outdoor activities. The Champagne-Valley tourist route starts in Épernay and heads west beyond Château-Thierry, with views over the valley from elevated viewpoints. It therefore extends beyond the département.
Champagne culture and history
Marne lies in the heart of Champagne. Champagne hillsides, houses and cellars represent inherited know-how. Pressoria is a museum connected with Champagne and offers a museum perspective on this cultural theme. The Cave aux Coquillages offers a different focus, with fossilised shells on display that are around 45 million years old. Winegrowing culture and the history of the Earth thus offer different perspectives on what there is to discover in Marne.
The Dormans Memorial commemorates the First and Second Battles of the Marne in 1914 and 1918. It is one of Marne’s emblematic historic sites and is classified in its entirety as a French historic monument. The name Marne is therefore associated not only with landscape and Champagne, but also with a memorial whose significance spans two years of war.
Cycling routes: compare distance and difficulty
Several routes and plans are relevant to cyclists. A planned network of 820 kilometres of cycle paths is being developed; this figure refers to the project. The Véloroute de la Vallée de la Marne crosses the département from west to east, first following the Marne and then the Marne Canal.
The cycling connection between Reims and Épernay is 38.5 kilometres long and rated difficult. Challenging terrain and shared traffic are among the reasons it is intended for experienced cyclists. The route passes through forests, vineyard hillsides and typical villages in the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park. In contrast, the 45-kilometre Dormans–Condé-sur-Marne section of the Vallée de la Marne cycle route is considered easy and accessible to everyone. Along this section, there are views of Champagne hillsides, the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park and remains from the First World War. Comparing the routes can help you choose: the shorter Reims–Épernay connection is rated difficult, while the longer Dormans–Condé-sur-Marne section is rated easy.
