Pierry can be explored through a distinctive blend of local history, church architecture and Champagne culture. A three-kilometre themed trail, the Église Saint-Julien, the Château de Pierry and tours at Champagne Vollereaux each offer a different perspective. You can shape your stay around whether you would prefer to follow a route with information panels, focus on historical sites or plan a guided cellar tour with a tasting.

A themed trail overlooking the slopes

The Balade au XVIIIe siècle is a three-kilometre themed trail through Pierry. It showcases the town’s architectural, historical and natural heritage, with 14 information panels along the route. The trail also includes a viewpoint with a panoramic view of the surrounding slopes. This way, the route combines specific information about Pierry with views of the landscape. If you are interested in the interplay between architectural history and nature, you will find a continuous route here rather than a single place to visit.

Church architecture and château history

The Église Saint-Julien de Pierry also brings together architectural and historical details. It has richly decorated stained-glass windows and houses the tomb of Frère Oudart. Inside the church, a wide central aisle is flanked by two side aisles. The central aisle forms the room’s main axis, with the side aisles running along either side. The windows and tomb add artistic and historical features to the building’s architecture.

The Château de Pierry offers a glimpse into the history of winegrowing: it was built around 1734 as a wine estate and is connected with the origins of Champagne. Visitors can explore the reception rooms in the main building, the large English garden and the outbuildings. Other features include the gallery of the kings of France and the dynasties of Champagne, a Champagne-style attic, and the press museum with a vaulted cellar dating from the monastic period. Different periods of history can thus be seen side by side: the estate dates from the 18th century, while the vaulted cellar is attributed to the monastic period. Check current visiting arrangements before planning, as access rules may change.

Experience Champagne: cellars, tastings and picnics

Champagne Vollereaux is a family-run business in Pierry that has been producing Champagne there for six generations. Individuals and groups can book a one-hour guided cellar tour with a tasting of three Champagnes. The vineyard picnic also includes a guided cellar tour: it is scheduled for 11 a.m., followed by the picnic from noon to 2 p.m. The three-hour experience is designed for a minimum of four people, must be booked 72 hours in advance and is offered from April to September. The two Vollereaux experiences differ in duration and format: a one-hour tour or a three-hour programme with a cellar visit and picnic.

At the Château de Pierry, guided Champagne tastings may take place in the press cellar or in the château grounds, depending on the season. The tasting location therefore varies with the season. As operator offerings, seasonal availability and booking conditions may change, check the latest dates and details before booking.
