Fagnières combines an elevated position above the Marne Valley with a variety of things to discover: a former riverbed, Saint-Remi Church, a rose garden and Aquacité. The town lies on a hill at an elevation of 90 metres and overlooks the Marne Valley and the river of the same name. For a first overview, it is worth distinguishing this broad landscape perspective from the specific architectural and leisure offerings.

Hilltop setting and traces of the river

The former bed of the Coole is still visible below rue Marcel Pinotie and is known as petit Voué. These two landscape features represent different scales: the Marne and its valley provide the broader geographical context, while petit Voué identifies a specific trace of an earlier river course below the street. Together, they offer both an overview of the landscape and a clearly named local feature.

Saint-Remi: a history of construction in several phases

Saint-Remi Church can be understood through its architecture and the sequence in which it was built. Its nave is Romanesque; the north aisle dates from the early 19th century. Between 1850 and 1870, the apse, transept, south aisle and west façade were rebuilt in two phases by the architect François Poisel of Châlons. The church therefore cannot be attributed to a single period of construction. The early origins of the north aisle contrast with the later rebuilding, which took place in two stages. For architecture enthusiasts, a particular point of interest is distinguishing these different periods. The transept runs across the nave.

Rose garden and Aquacité

The Fagnières rose garden is further defined by specific rose varieties. Named varieties include “Abbaye de Cluny,” “Alain Souchon,” “Charles Austin,” “Graham Thomas” and “Pierre de Ronsard.” For rose enthusiasts, this selection makes the garden a distinctive attraction in its own right.

Aquacité combines a sports area with a wellness area, each with features that are easy to distinguish. The sports pool measures 25 x 15 metres and has six lanes. The wellness area includes a sauna and a hammam. It can be reached via a separate entrance, without having to cross the pool area. Aquacité is open to athletes, children, families, school groups and people with reduced mobility. This provides specific details on both the pool’s dimensions and number of lanes, and the wellness area’s separate access.

A festival with concerts in July

The Festival des Musiques d’Ici et d’Ailleurs takes place every year in July and also includes concerts in Fagnières. If you would like to include a concert in your stay, check the dates in that year’s programme. This event is therefore different from the church’s architectural history: for a concert visit, the programme for the relevant year is what matters, whereas the construction phases described are fixed historical dates.
