Twelve information panels along the “La Champagne de demain” Wine Trail tell the story of Champagne and the challenges facing winegrowers. Together with forest paths, church architecture and visits to Champagne houses, Chigny-Les-Roses offers several ways to explore the area.
Vineyards and Paths
Chigny-Les-Roses is nestled among vineyards along a cliff face, with dark green forest stretching above it. The “La Champagne de demain” Wine Trail passes through the village amid its vineyard landscape. Its twelve information panels cover both the history of Champagne and new challenges facing winegrowers. The trail thus combines scenery with information about viticulture.
The Étang de la Pissotte is also an idyllic place for walks. The Chemin des 5 seigneurs offers a different experience: it passes through the forest and connects the surrounding communities. The terroir of the Grande Montagne de Reims region is also characterised by chalky soils and the predominance of Pinot Noir. This regional viticultural context adds to the picture of the vineyards around Chigny-Les-Roses.
Church and Local History
Dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the church has Romanesque naves and a 16th-century choir with large flamboyant windows. The church also contains a painting dating from 1907, signed “G.Hervé Chigny 1907”. A bust of Mme Pommery stands at the Fontaine de Mme Pommery. These details provide several specific points of interest on a cultural tour: sacred architecture, a dated painting and a village fountain named after a person.
Champagne Houses and Visits
At Champagne Guy Dumangin, the winery tour covers the history of the house, its underground cellars and its Champagne-making facilities. It ends with a tasting of its Champagnes; reservations are requested. At Champagne Gardet, experiences and tastings are available by prior appointment only, from Monday to Saturday. The vat room and viticultural facilities of Maison de Champagne Gardet are located in Chigny-Les-Roses in a Belle Époque-style building.
At Champagne Lassalle Hanin, visitors can learn about vineyard work and winemaking at the estate after contacting the house in advance. Champagne Michel Tixier offers cellar tours with tastings on request; vineyard tours are also possible. The house produces six cuvées, including a rosé de saignée made from 100% Meunier. The various offerings differ both in their focus and in the advance arrangements required; bear these conditions in mind when planning your visits.
