A sandy beach on the North Sea, protected dunes and traces of the lighter trade give Klitmøller several tangible points of interest. For trip planning, you can distinguish between the coast, outdoor activities and maritime history: the beach is suitable for recreational fishing and surfing, while the buildings and historical connections offer a different focus. You can tailor your stay to whether you are most interested in coastal attractions, hiking opportunities or local history.

Coast, Dunes and Views

Klitmøller Beach is a sandy beach on the North Sea and is suitable for recreational fishing and surfing. A large part of the dunes is protected. Visitors should use the established paths there: walking on the dunes outside the paths can damage plants and measures to combat sand drift. Follow the current local guidance and restrictions when walking in the dunes.

A ramp leads from the beach promenade to the viewing platform at Hummerhuset. From the platform, you can look out over the sea and the town; there is a toilet in the viewing-platform area. If you plan to visit, check the condition of the facilities on site.

Paths and Activities

There are hiking opportunities in Thy National Park from Klitmøller, and kayaking is possible in the area around the town. The Vandet Sø Route starts in Klitmøller and goes around Vandet Sø. These activities have different geographical connections: hiking opportunities are linked to Thy National Park, kayaking to the area around Klitmøller, and the route has a named starting point in the town and follows a course around the lake. This makes it possible to distinguish a general activity option from a specifically described route.

Maritime History and Buildings

At Ørhage, you can see equipment sheds, an auction house and a rescue station. Many old houses in Klitmøller are also part of the history of the lighter trade: they were built during its heyday and are well preserved. These buildings offer a different perspective on the town from its beach and dunes.

Klitmøller Church was built in 1872. It acquired its present appearance, with brown brickwork, during a major restoration in 1966–67. The altarpiece was painted by Queen Louise, the wife of Christian IX. The construction date, restoration and altarpiece provide different points of interest in the church’s history.

Møllegården still stands and recalls a former major occupation in Klitmøller: milling grain from farms inland and then transporting it by ship to Norway. The connection between grain milling and shipping adds an economic history of the town to its visible buildings.

The restored coastal boat T 97 “Bellis” offers insight into the instruments and equipment available to fishermen in the 1950s and 1960s. If you would like to visit, check access before your trip.

Klitmøller’s historical connection as host of the Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup dates back to 2010. If a current competition is important to your trip, check the event schedule in advance.
