Øsløs combines striking features of its church and the story of poet Johan Skjoldborg with opportunities to observe nature in the nearby area. This lets you tailor your stay to different interests: church architecture and literary history are on the agenda, as are wetlands and birdwatching.

Wetlands and Birdwatching

The coastal areas near Øsløs are part of Natura 2000 site 16, “Løgstør Bredning, Vejlerne and Bulbjerg.” Kogleakssøen is part of Bygholm Vejle. From Øsløs, you can reach the lake by driving north along the western side of Bygholm Vejle and then east.

For nature watching, it is important to distinguish between the Vejlerne areas themselves and the visitor facilities on their outskirts: access to the areas themselves has not been permitted since 1960. However, visitor facilities on the edge of the nature reserve make it possible to experience nature there. In the surrounding area, three bird towers, four bird hides and around 15 viewpoints along nearby roads and paths offer opportunities for birdwatching. Check the current visitor options and facilities before your visit.

Church Architecture in Detail

Øsløs Church brings together features from different periods of construction and furnishing. The chancel and nave are Romanesque; the Late Gothic tower dates from around 1500. Pointed blind arcades can be seen on its lower section. The bell hangs in the high sound opening on the north side of the tower. The different forms make it possible to look more closely at the exterior, rather than seeing the church as a single, uniform building.

Traces of different periods can also be found inside and in the church’s furnishings. Wall paintings from the 15th century were discovered in Øsløs Church and whitewashed over in 1916. The windows on the south side of the nave probably date from the Reformation era. The altarpiece was installed in 1923, created by Troels Trier, and depicts Jesus at the age of twelve in the Temple. Thus, Romanesque building elements, a Late Gothic tower, a cautiously attributed date for the windows and a 20th-century altarpiece all meet in the history of the same church.

Johan Skjoldborg and Local History

Johan Skjoldborg’s House is part of Museum Thy. The poet’s childhood home opened as a museum in 1961, a hundred years after his birth. It illustrates how a village craftsman and smallholder lived in the second half of the 19th century. The rooms were arranged in an effort to recreate the way they are described in Skjoldborg’s 1934 autobiography, “Min Mindebog.”

Specific details in the house include a floor covering made of small beach stones and driftwood used at the hearth. These elements draw attention to everyday life and materials, not just to the poet’s life story. His commemoration is also connected to Øsløs: the memorial stone to Johan Skjoldborg was erected in the village in 1951 by Han Herredernes Husmandskreds. The history of the childhood home and the public memorial therefore complement each other, while offering different kinds of visitor experiences.
