Stenbjerg: Dunes and Coastal History

Stenbjerg lies in the heart of Thy National Park, surrounded by the sea, dunes, dune heaths and Stenbjerg Klitplantage. The trails each highlight different landscapes: they lead through dunes and hilly forests, and to wetlands. The area also bears witness to its coastal and fishing history at Stenbjerg Landingsplads and nearby. When planning an excursion, it is therefore worth considering both the route length and its theme.

Landscape and Nature

Stenbjerg Klithede is designated as a Natura 2000 site and is part of a 680-hectare protected dune landscape on the west coast of Thy. It is a very rare type of natural landscape from a European perspective. Characteristic heathland plants, as well as nesting cranes and ruffs, find a habitat there. The nature trails offer their own highlights: the Embak route leads through varied, hilly forest to the wetlands of Bislet and Embak Vand, while other routes pass through dunes.

Hiking Trails by Length and Focus

The marked Stenbjerg Vest route is 1.2 km long and starts at a car park on Stenbjergvej. The 3.5 km Gravshøj route runs along an ancient coastal cliff from the Stone Age and passes several Bronze Age burial mounds. At 5.7 km, the yellow-marked Embak route is longer; its destination is the wetlands of Bislet and Embak Vand. These routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in their landscape and historical themes. Check the trail conditions for Stenbjerg Vest before setting out.

The Stenbjerg Kultursti is a 6.2 km circular route. It starts at Stenbjerg Landingsplads, leads through the dunes to Stenbjerg, and returns via Stenbjerg Båke and the beach. This makes the Kultursti the longest of the routes mentioned here. Its course connects dunes and beach with a historic sea mark; the Gravshøj route, by contrast, focuses on prehistoric traces, while the Embak route highlights forests and wetlands.

Coastal Heritage and Local History

Stenbjerg Redningshus was built from red bricks in 1931 and is structurally protected as a historic building. The Stenbjerg Redningsmuseum displays, among other things, a rescue boat from 1892. Stenbjerg Båke is also part of the coast’s history: the historic sea mark was erected as part of a system of 23 sea marks along the Jutland west coast, built in 1884–85.

Stenbjerg Kirke was built in 1895. In the dunes near Stenbjerg Kirkevej is a German observation bunker from the Second World War; information about the war and the Atlantic Wall is available there. Käte Lassens Hus and the black shed to the west tell the story of the artists who spent time in Stenbjerg and used people and nature as subjects for their art.

The small equipment sheds at Stenbjerg Landingsplads were built by local fishermen around 1900. They were not used as homes, but bear witness to a time when fishermen earned their living through dangerous fishing trips on the North Sea. These structures add the town’s working history to the picture of its coastal landscape.

Seasonal Events and Practical Information

Stenbjergdag takes place every summer on the second Sunday in July at Stenbjerg Landingsplads. The programme includes musical entertainment, a fish buffet and rescue demonstrations. Freshly caught local fish is served at the old buildings of the landing place beside the water. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the date for the year in question.

The Thy National Park information centre at Stenbjerg Landingsplads is open daily from 12:00 to 16:00, from 27 March to 31 October 2026. For later trips, check the opening hours again. If you are travelling without a car, you can take a train or bus to Thisted and continue to Stenbjerg on bus 313. Check the latest departures before travelling.
