In Vester Jølby, Ice Age landforms meet a winding village layout and traces of former life on the coast. There are also hiking trails with different conditions: a section of the Vestermarken circular route is accessible when the water level is low, while a local hiking trail around Jølby Nor also includes an old church path. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these landscape and cultural themes separately.

Moraine Landscape and Views

The moraine hill at Vester Jølby was formed by Ice Age glaciers. The village lies on a tongue-shaped moraine formation, bordered to the southeast and northwest by areas of seabed that emerged as the sea receded. These landforms create varied experiences of the landscape. The flat foreland at Rovvig also consists of seabed that emerged as the sea receded, here dating from the Stone Age.

The northwestern slopes near Vester Jølby offer views of Skyum Bjerge, Vildsund and Rovvig. In the area around Vester Jølby, the coast at Dragstrup Vig is narrow and mostly stony. Behind it are coastal meadows and coastal heath, bounded inland by coastal protection dikes. From Kr. Koldsvej between Vester Jølby and Dragstrup, the view extends over grazed meadows and reed beds around Jølby Nor. Another viewpoint is by the pump house at the mouth of Lyngbro Bæk, where it flows into the fjord: from there, you can see the coastal landscape with its coastal meadows and bay, as well as the scrub and reed beds behind them.

Village Layout and History

Vester Jølby is laid out as a winding linear village. Detached farms are integrated into the village alongside single-family homes. The cultural landscape of Vester Jølby and Fjordkær spans the period from 1845 to the present day. An older observation concerns the star-shaped reorganization of the fields: in 2004, it was still clearly visible and was considered the finest example of its kind on Mors.

Small, landless houses from the 19th century stand on the beach at Rovvig. They were originally inhabited by day laborers and fishermen. Together, these old houses form a remarkable ensemble. Here, the history of settlement is reflected not only in the village plan, but also in the buildings on the beach and the effect they create together.

The Romanesque Dragstrup Kirke is nearby. It was built in the 12th or 13th century near a holy spring. It is the only church on Mors to have preserved frescoes dating from around 1480. A visit to the church can be combined in your mind with the old church path, which runs along a locally signposted hiking trail between Dragstrup Kirke and Vester Jølby.

Hiking Trails and Different Conditions

Jølby Nor includes reed beds, extensively grazed meadows and a plantation. This diverse natural setting provides the basis for a rich variety of plant and animal life. A locally signposted hiking trail around Jølby Nor includes, among other things, the old church path over Lyngbro Bæk from Dragstrup Kirke to Vester Jølby. As trail conditions should be confirmed locally, check the route before setting out.

The Vestermarken circular route offers a different perspective on the landscape: starting at the sports grounds in Rovvig, part of the route can be walked along the coast when the water level is low. The water level is a specific requirement for this section. At the end of Fjordkær, a route leads through the forest to the coastal meadows at Dragstrup Vig and then follows the water's edge. On a larger scale, the Kystruten Mors is divided into ten stages of approximately equal length. These details have different focuses: the coastal route, trail section and stage divisions are each separate points of reference when choosing a hike.
