If you are considering Erslev as a travel destination, you can focus on different things: the landscape along the valley ridge, church and industrial history, art or collections. The landscape is particularly tangible at Erslev Kalkgrav, a former quarry that is now a nature area with extensive grazing. Other attractions for different interests include Erslev Church, the lime kiln and several art venues.
Landscape and lime history
Erslev lies along the upper edge of the valley ridge beside Lyngbro Bæk, with access from there to the lower-lying grazing areas in the valley. The contrast between the upper edge and the lower-lying areas gives the landscape a clear spatial orientation. Erslev Kalkgrav adds another dimension to this view as a nature area on a former quarry; extensive grazing is part of its current use. This lets you consider the landscape and the history of land use as two connected aspects of Erslev: the valley ridge with its lower-lying grazing areas and the transformation of a quarry into a nature area.
Lime kiln and church architecture
A “Spor i landskabet” trail connects Erslev Kalkovn with Erslev Kalkgrav. Built around 1930, the lime kiln is part of a route that brings together industrial history and landscape. Erslev Kalkovn lies west of Erslev Church. The church’s Romanesque nave and chancel with lead roofing, along with its Late Gothic porch, are its distinctive architectural features. This combination makes the church a point of interest in its own right if you want to explore historic architectural styles: Romanesque and Late Gothic elements can be distinguished in the same building.
Collections, art and hands-on activities
Dukkeskolen offers something different: more than 2,500 model cars in various scales are on display there. Anyone interested in miniature vehicles will find a clearly defined collection here. Dukkeskolen also offers workshops and classes where participants can make their own dolls. Looking and creating are two different ways to engage with the collection. Visitors can admire the model cars and make their own dolls.
At Røntveds, the focus is on handmade sculptures in granite, bronze, glass and ceramics. The sculpture garden has small paths, and the works are set among trees and plants. The paths and the sculptures’ placement among the trees and plants make the garden itself part of the art experience. Admission includes a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. As seasonal conditions may change, please check this detail before your visit.
Galleri Bork offers a different range of works: sculptures, paintings, gouache, watercolours, woodcuts and ceramics are on display. Compared with Røntveds’ focus on sculpture, the range here extends beyond three-dimensional works to include paintings and graphic techniques. Summer courses are also offered.
If you would rather view a collection during your visit, you can focus on the model cars; if you would like to create something yourself, Dukkeskolen offers workshops and classes in doll-making. The art venues, on the other hand, focus on exhibited works, with summer courses also offered at Galleri Bork.
