Mariager combines medieval monastic history, salt-related attractions and a rose-filled old town with excursions by the fjord. The historic districts are characterized by cobbled streets and old half-timbered houses adorned with roses. The buildings have been preserved in their original style and are still in use. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the church and museum, salt or the surrounding landscape.

The monastery and church in historical perspective

Mariager Church and Monastery are the remains of a medieval Bridgettine monastery. It was founded around 1446 and dissolved with the introduction of the Reformation in 1536. The Mariager Museum has an exhibition about the monastery covering the period from around 1430 to 1536. Its timeframe therefore begins before the monastery’s assumed founding around 1446. Another dated detail is the organ in Mariager Church: it was installed and fully voiced in the spring of 2010.

Salt as an experience and craft

At the Mariager Saltcenter, the experience Det Døde Hav (The Dead Sea) offers a saltwater bath at around 39 °C, where the strong buoyancy lets you float. The salt exhibition covers the geology, history, chemistry and significance of salt; films, props and experiments help explain these topics. Another aspect of salt history is Mariager Sydesalt: at the Sydehytten, it is made by hand from seawater that is around 260 million years old. Check the Saltcenter’s current offerings before your trip.

On foot and on the fjord

If you want to explore Mariager’s historic districts on foot, the Mariager Route offers a varied and scenic city walking trail. Yellow triangles mark the way. In 2024, the route was certified as a premium city walking trail by the German Hiking Institute; it was the first route in Denmark to receive this distinction. On some days, the section along the fjord may be flooded. Check conditions for this part of the route before setting out.

The Svanen offers trips from Mariager with views across Mariager Fjord and the surrounding landscape; schedules vary. The seasonal Mariager-Handest heritage railway travels 17 kilometers through fjord landscapes, small-town scenery, beech forest, rolling hills, heathland and river valleys. A ride takes 45 minutes each way. While the Svanen focuses on views of the fjord and landscape, the train journey passes through a succession of different landscape types. Check the Svanen’s schedule or the railway’s seasonal dates before planning your trip.

Rose garden, burial mound and seasonal options

Mariager Rosenhave is a 2,000-square-meter rose garden with 22 themed gardens. Its approximately 800 plants include 400 different rose varieties. Just outside Mariager is Hohøj, a Bronze Age burial mound about 12 meters high and around 72 meters in diameter. From there, you can enjoy sweeping views across Mariager Fjord and the surrounding hills. Rosenhave and Hohøj offer contrasting impressions: a landscaped garden and a broad view across the countryside.

A seasonal option on the water is Mariager Vandpark: it is located in Mariager Fjord about 120 meters offshore from Mariager’s sandy beach and has a slide, trampolines and tunnels. Its summer season runs from June to September. Confirm current access options before your visit.
