Around Mariager Fjord, fjord landscapes, towns and historic areas alternate. The cycling route of the same name runs mostly along cycle paths and quiet country roads; some sections follow gravel and forest tracks. The changing terrain is therefore part of the route, alongside the diverse landscapes and places it connects.
Cycling routes: circular tours and A-to-B routes
The route around Mariager Fjord is a 65-kilometre circular tour with a scenic cycling route and plenty of stops along the way. The approximately 30-kilometre Villestrup Ă Route is laid out differently: it runs from Stinesminde on Mariager Fjord to Rebild Bakker in the heart of Rold Skov. Along the way, fields, forests and streams alternate, and the route also offers beautiful views. The five-kilometre Ajstrup Route from Hadsund to Ajstrup Bugt offers a shorter combination of cycling and walking. You can choose a route by comparing its length and layout, whether you prefer a circular tour, an A-to-B route or a short combined route.
Another A-to-B cycling route follows the former Hadsund railway line for 11 kilometres between Gistrup and Hadsund, with no major climbs. It differs from both the circular route around the fjord and the combined cycling and walking routes. Which route suits your outing depends in part on whether you want to ride a loop or travel between two endpoints.
Walks by the fjord and through historic towns
The Panorama Route starts at Hobro Marina and leads through a varied landscape, with elevated viewpoints and scenic paths along the fjord. It is clearly signposted, and most walkers can complete it in about three hours. In Mariager, a 12.2-kilometre walking route passes through streets and natural landscapes and visits historic sights. These include views of Mariager Fjord, the well-preserved town centre and the rose garden with its many colourful flowers.
The Mariager Route also passes the old Mariager Monastery and Hohøj. This burial mound is considered the largest Bronze Age burial mound in Northern Europe. For a walk that combines nature and history, Katbjerg Odde also offers a landscape of rolling terrain, ancient broadleaf forests, winding streams, lime-rich springs and flower-filled, nutrient-poor meadows.
Coast, forest and salt
Ăster Hurup has one of the most family-friendly bathing beaches on the east coast. Shallow, calm water and soft sand define the beach, though conditions can vary by season. The southern part of Rold Skov is also among the natural areas in Mariagerfjord. Its deep forests and rolling terrain offer opportunities for hiking, cycling and enjoying nature.
In Mariager, the Saltcenter combines salt exhibitions and traditional crafts with a salt bath and family activities by the fjord. Experiences also include a replica of an old Polish salt mine, with the FunRide film taking you underground. Mariager Sydesalt is made by hand from underground brine. The brine comes from a region that was covered by the sea about 260 million years agoâa geological past that gives the local salt-making craft an added dimension.
Windmills, museums and the Viking Age
The thatched Havnø Mill is a Dutch-style windmill dating from 1842 and is considered the oldest still-operating windmill in North Jutland. After extensive restoration from 1995 to 2001, it opened as a working museum mill. Guided tours are available on selected Wednesdays in summer; flour is made on special milling days and sold under the name Havnø møllemel. Check the current dates before your visit.
The Cirkusmuseet i Rold is housed in the former winter quarters of Circus Miehe. The preserved wooden building is Denmarkâs only surviving circus building of this kind. The permanent exhibition explores the history of Danish circus and displays posters, objects and costumes. At Artistens VĂŚrksted, visitors can try circus skills for themselves.
Fyrkat is one of the five Viking Age ring fortresses on the UNESCO World Heritage List, built around 970 to 980 AD. An admission ticket to Viking Museum Fyrkat gives you access to the chieftainâs farm with its lifelike reconstructions, the mill farm with its museum exhibitions, and the nearby Viking fortress. As access arrangements can change, check them before travelling. At Mariager Museum, youâll find objects from Mariager and the area south of the fjord, as well as an exhibition about the monastery from around 1430 to 1536. A special feature of the visit: most of the exhibits may be touched.
