Hobro lies at the innermost end of Mariager Fjord and offers different ways to explore history and landscape. Fyrkat and its Viking heritage may be at the heart of your plans; art, maritime history and paths along the fjord also shape the town. Which of these themes interests you most can help you decide how to spend your time in Hobro.

Fyrkat: Viking Fortress and Museum

The rampart at Fyrkat marks the original site of a Viking fortress that enclosed 16 large longhouses. Fyrkat is one of five Danish Viking fortresses on the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the Vikingemuseet Fyrkat, the subject ranges from specific archaeological finds to a broader transformation: the exhibition explains the transition from Norse mythology to Christianity. A reconstructed longhouse is open to visitors. The reconstructed chieftain’s farmstead comprises nine buildings from the time of King Harald Bluetooth.

On days when the Vikingemuseet Fyrkat is open, guided tours are offered in English and Danish. Visitor information may change seasonally, so check the latest opening days and tour times in advance.

Art, Technology and Distinctive Architecture

Hobro’s cultural venues also explore other periods and subjects. Kunstetagerne Hobro is a museum of modern art and design in the former Bies Brewery, dating from 1857. The Gasmuseet is located in the former Hobro Gasværk, built in 1898 and converted into an exhibition venue and cultural centre. The Gasmuseet includes a science room and an outdoor activity wall. Hobro Kirke is one of the few churches with both its tower and altar facing east. A professional regional theatre has been based at the cultural harbour since 2003.

Maritime History by the Fjord

At the Maritime Culture Centre Mariagerfjord in Hobro, visitors can explore the world of wooden ships and the history of the fjord from the waterside. Denmark’s oldest wooden-ship yard is located in the harbour area; ships have been built and maintained there since 1849. Bies Bryghus in Hobro produces beer and offers beer tastings as well as restaurant service. Details of what is available to visitors may change, so check the current options in advance.

The excursion boat Svanen also calls at Hobro, where passengers can board and disembark. Sailings are seasonal, and timetables may change. If you are planning a trip, check the current timetable.

Walking and Cycling Routes

There are two different walking routes to choose from. The Fyrkatstien is about 2.6 kilometres long and connects the centre of Hobro with the Vikingemuseet Fyrkat and the UNESCO ring fortress of Fyrkat. The marked Hobro-Østerskov route, by contrast, is a circular trail of about six kilometres through Hobro Østerskov and the area along Mariager Fjord. The route passes Duehøj, which offers views over the fjord. The routes therefore differ in both length and format: the Fyrkatstien connects named destinations, while the longer circular route takes in woodland and the fjord area. The starting point of the Hobro-Østerskov route is about 800 metres from Hobro bus station; route details may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

For cycling, the Hærvejsruten (Cykelrute 3) shares a route with the Mariager Fjord cycle route (Cykelrute 32) between Hobro harbour and Fyrkat.
