Helberskov can be explored from several angles: the village’s closely grouped farms and half-timbered houses, the historic Bjerget, and the coast, with opportunities for swimming and windsurfing. These themes offer different ways to decide what to focus on—from the village layout and historical events to the waterside landscape.
Farms, Half-Timbered Houses and Village Layout
Helberskov is a so-called *forteklyngeby*: the farms are clustered closely around the village pond and the old meeting place. The term primarily describes the village’s spatial layout. Along a winding road, closely spaced farms that have not been relocated stand alongside smaller country houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Both the arrangement of the farms and the architectural forms are therefore defining features of the village’s appearance.
Helberskov is a well-preserved village with many old half-timbered houses. All three types of half-timbering can be found on the buildings at Lodsgården. While the term *forteklyngeby* refers to the grouping of the farms, Lodsgården displays different forms of half-timbering. The settlement pattern and the construction style thus offer two distinct ways to explore Helberskov’s architectural heritage.
Bjerget: Landscape and History
Bjerget in Helberskov is a glacial moraine hill offering wide views of the surrounding area. It is also a local meeting place where activities are held for residents and tourists in the region. Its history reaches back to the Second World War: a German coastal battery was located on Bjerget. The German garrison surrendered on 10 May 1945, as one of the last in Denmark. A memorial stone on Bjerget commemorates the liberation, which in Helberskov did not take place until that day.
Local festive traditions on Bjerget include Fastelavn, celebrated with ring jousting, and Pentecost, celebrated with a maypole. If you would like to experience either celebration, check before your trip whether one falls during your travel dates. Another historic structure is the Helberskov Pump House: built on the coast north of Helberskov in 1947, it is part of the land-reclamation landscape.
Coast and Nearby Area
Helberskov Beach is part of a coast shaped by silting, with salt meadows and shallow water. Swimming is possible on the coast at Helberskov, which is also considered suitable for windsurfing. On the municipality’s bathing-water page, updated in 2025, Helberskov is listed as one of Mariagerfjord Municipality’s 15 bathing-water stations, with an official bathing-water profile. It is worth checking the profile before swimming.
Als Odde lies nearby: a protected coastal area with mudflats, salt meadows and a small fishing village. Access to the protected area is free, and there are publicly accessible paths in the plantation north of it. The nearby area therefore offers a different coastal experience from Helberskov Beach: at Als Odde, mudflats and the small fishing village are part of the landscape, while Helberskov Beach is characterized by shallow water and salt meadows. For orientation, from Als you can reach the headland by driving south through Helberskov.
