Als lies on the Kattegat, on a hilly island surrounded by low-lying land. The area offers several different points of interest when choosing a destination: walks in the Als Havbakker hills, a stroll along the pier, the coastal stretch of the North Sea Trail and Als Church, with its architectural and maritime history. There is also Malolorca, a beach island off Als that involves wading 700 metres to reach. This makes it possible to consider nature, local history and a specific coastal destination as different focuses for your trip.
Landscape and trails
At 28 metres above sea level, Ravnbjerg is the highest point on Als. The Als Havbakker hills reach more than 23 metres above sea level. You can enjoy walks in the scenic surroundings of the Als Havbakker; conditions may vary depending on the season. These two elevations offer specific reference points in the landscape, while the Als Havbakker are also a destination for outdoor activities.
The North Sea Trail offers a different perspective on the surroundings. Between Øster Hurup and Als, it runs very close to the coast and offers beautiful views of the Kattegat. From Als, the route passes through the fjord landscape to Hadsund and continues south through Kastbjerg Ådal. The named sections therefore differ in their landscapes: one runs close to the coast with views of the Kattegat, while the other passes through the fjord landscape and Kastbjerg Ådal. The pier in Als is also a good place for a stroll. The options offer different points of focus: walks in the Als Havbakker, a coastal route with views of the Kattegat, and a stroll along the pier.
Als Church and local history
Als Church was built between 1250 and 1275 in the Late Romanesque style; the tower and porch were added later, in the Late Gothic period. The church thus shows two distinct building phases: the Late Romanesque structure and the later Gothic additions. For centuries, it served as a sea mark for shipping, linking architectural history with maritime navigation. The churchyard at Als Church contains old iron crosses with white seashells at their feet. This is considered a local maritime burial custom. The village of Als also has a long history: its history can be traced back to the Stone Age.
Malolorca: beach island off Als
Malolorca is the local, unofficial name for a 1,400-metre-long beach island off Als. To get to Malolorca, travel from Als along Vestvejen in the direction of Helberskov. Reaching the island also involves wading 700 metres through very shallow water. Conditions may vary; check them before your visit. Both the journey there and the wading distance are therefore factors to consider when planning a trip to this coastal destination.
Local artisan bakery and delicacy
Als Bageri has been a local artisan bakery since 1927. The local delicacy “Mariagerfjord marcipan ål” is also recommended. This culinary point of interest complements Als’s landscape and history.
