The burial site at Lindholm Høje was used for about 600 years, from around 400 AD until shortly before 1000 AD. Lindholm Høje is Denmark’s largest burial site from the Viking Age. The exhibition at Lindholm Høje offers a virtual Viking helmet and an interactive experience of rowing a Viking ship. Exhibition details may change.

Art, architecture and industrial history

The Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg showcases Danish and international art from the 20th century to the present day. Its permanent collection comprises almost 4,000 works. The building itself is also part of the visit: the museum is housed in a white marble building designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Every year, Kunsten holds 200 talks, concerts, family workshops, guided tours and other activities; the programme varies.

At the Utzon Center, a permanent exhibition offers insights into the work of Jørn Utzon, the creator of the Sydney Opera House. The centre also offers workshops, talks, events, educational activities, guided tours and city walks. Individual programmes vary. Godthåb Hammerværk showcases another aspect of cultural heritage: this preserved early industrial site retains its buildings, inventory and watercourses.

Island paths, heath and fjord landscape

Egholm is an island in the Limfjord within Aalborg Municipality. The ferry runs every half hour between Aalborg and Egholm; as the timetable may change, check it before crossing. Several walking trails start at Egholm’s ferry terminal. The island’s landscape includes coastal meadows, uncultivated areas, forests and field paths, with native plant and animal life.

Lille Vildmose covers about 7,700 hectares and is Denmark’s largest protected land area. Visitor facilities include observation towers, boardwalks, viewpoints and platforms. Visitors can also watch moose and experience the restored Birkesø, with its rich birdlife. The area known as Mellemområdet can be explored independently free of charge; local restrictions may change. Lille Vildmosecentret provides maps and advice for visitors exploring the heath.

At Halkær Sø, there are trails and birdwatching towers from which to observe birdlife. Cycle route 102 runs around the lake and the adjacent inlet of the Limfjord, offering a fine view across the river valley. Throughout the year, Halkær Mølle Nature Centre offers activities for visitors in Halkær Ådal and Aalborg Fjordland; individual activities may vary. Hammer Bakker offers a different landscape, with beech forests, open heathland, plains, lakes and ponds. The municipality’s natural areas also include hiking and mountain biking routes, shelters and dog forests.

Animals and festival culture

At Aalborg Zoo, visitors can see wildlife from around the world, learn about their way of life and take part in various activities. Guided tours cover the animals and everyday life at the zoo; availability may vary. Every year, 100,000 costumed guests gather for Aalborg Carnival, although the actual number may vary from year to year. The festival culminates in a large closing celebration in Kildeparken; programme details also vary annually.
