Aalborg combines museums, city history and architecture with natural areas and trails along the Limfjord. When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding what you’re most interested in: would you like to focus on art, explore maritime and urban history, or include cycling and hiking trails?

Art, Architecture and City History

The Utzon Center on Aalborg’s waterfront combines architecture, design and art with exhibitions, conferences, meetings and culinary experiences. At DEN KLODSEDE BY, visitors can use LEGO to build their own architectural creations; details of this activity may change.

The Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg offers a different focus. Its collection comprises almost 4,000 works of modern and contemporary art and spans more than 100 years of art history. The museum was designed by Alvar Aalto, with the support of Elissa Aalto and Jean-Jacques BaruĂ«l. Where possible, most exhibition galleries use natural, indirect light; the building’s design allows it to be softly diffused. The collection, architecture and lighting offer visitors different points of interest.

Aalborg’s maritime history can also be explored firsthand: at Springeren – Maritimt Oplevelsescenter, visitors can enter a submarine and discover a collection of model ships depicting the city’s seafaring history. The underground GrĂ„brĂždrekloster Museet lies three metres below Algade and tells the story of the Greyfriars Monastery. It stood there from its construction in the 1240s until it was dissolved in 1530.

Aalborg Historiske Museum traces the city’s history from around the year 750, when Aalborg emerged in connection with a trading site on what was then the ØsterĂ„, to its later rise as an industrial city. Nordkraft illustrates another period of change: the cultural and leisure centre was created by transforming a former power station. It includes a theatre, two concert halls for rhythmic music, a cinema, exhibition facilities, an art school and extensive sports facilities. Musikkens Hus is home to Aalborg Symfoniorkester, which brings international soloists and guest conductors to Aalborg.

Nature, Trails and Activities

ØsterĂ„dalen Nord is a protected natural area of around 100 hectares close to Aalborg city centre. ØsterĂ„dalstien offers a designated cycling and hiking route: it runs from Aalborg city centre through ØsterĂ„dalen Nord and Syd to Dall MĂžllevej near SvanemĂžlleparken in Svenstrup. In places, it follows HĂŠrvejen, a national and international cycling route. This gives visitors a choice between a protected area and a trail with a clearly specified route as different options for enjoying nature and being active in the city’s surroundings.

The 16.5-hectare Vestre Fjordpark lies right by the Limfjord. Play options include a Tarzan course in the water, a forest course with a zip line, a water playground and trampolines. The playground on the roof of the lifeguard building has jumping equipment, a large net and a slide. At Aalborg Zoo, visitors can see wildlife from around the world and learn about the animals’ way of life; there are also activities for the whole family. Individual activities and programmes may change. From the summit of AalborgtĂ„rnet, the view stretches across Aalborg, the Limfjord and the landscape of North Jutland.

Street Art, Food and Trip Planning

Explore Aalborg’s street art on a self-planned walk featuring more than 50 murals. The number of works and the walking route materials may change as murals are added or removed. For a culinary break, The Lighthouse serves food from around the world. The market is Aalborg’s first permanent street food market; its status and offerings may change.

You can also include Egholm in your plans: the Egholm ferry connects Aalborg with the island, and the crossing takes five minutes. Check the timetable when planning your trip.
