The fortress in Velký Ořechov preserves several Baroque portals; the “Po hranici devíti katastrů” nature trail runs mostly through easy-to-walk, almost level woodland. These contrasting features give trip planning two clear focal points: architectural history and the landscape along the trail. There is also a Baroque church, smaller historic monuments and glimpses of local festivities.

The fortress and Baroque architectural history

The fortress dates from the 15th century and was remodelled in the 18th century. Several Baroque portals are among its preserved features. The building thus brings together two historical periods: its origins in the 15th century and its later remodelling. The fortress is also of particular historical, architectural and urban-planning significance. It is therefore a distinctive starting point for a visit to Velký Ořechov if you are interested in architectural history and how a town has developed.

The Church of St Wenceslas and its altars

The Church of St Wenceslas is a late 17th-century building and is classified as late Italian Baroque. This stylistic influence gives the church its own architectural character within the local building history. Its date also places it in a different period from the fortress, which dates back to the 15th century and was remodelled later.

The church has a main altar dedicated to St Wenceslas and side altars dedicated to the Marriage of the Virgin Mary and St Wendelin. The three dedications are clearly distinct: the main altar is followed by two side altars with their own religious associations. Along with the church’s Baroque classification, they offer another way to explore the town’s sacred art and history.

Nature trail: on foot or by bike

The “Po hranici devíti katastrů” nature trail is suitable for cycling. Its terrain is described particularly clearly for walking: for the most part, it runs through easy-to-walk, almost level woodland. So when considering your options for an outing, you can distinguish between its stated suitability for cycling and the described character of the terrain.

A turn-off leads via Velký Ořechov towards Luhačovice or Zlín. The route description thus includes not only the town’s name but also two directions. The nature trail can be considered a destination in its own right when planning a trip, while the fortress and church provide the architectural focus.

Statue and small chapel

In the centre of Velký Ořechov stands a stone statue of St John of Nepomuk dating from 1733. Its masonry pedestal has been restored more recently. The statue and pedestal thus connect a specific year with a later change to the monument. The small “Boží muka” niche chapel offers a different local feature: it stands beside a road south of Velký Ořechov and dates from the late 18th century. Its location and small scale set it clearly apart from the fortress and church.

Water and local events

The local landscape also includes a multipurpose water reservoir on the Částkovský stream. It was built in Velký Ořechov and covers 2.5 hectares. This area figure makes the feature a tangible part of the local landscape and adds a specific connection to water alongside the historic buildings.

The Ořechovjané brass band performs at various celebrations, balls, dance events, fairs, church ceremonies and other occasions. Music is therefore another facet of local cultural life alongside the architecture.

At the 2025 Veliký-Ořechov Easter fair, visitors could buy decorated Easter eggs, Easter decorations, jewellery, honey, wooden products, frgály, muffins and Ořechovské oplatky. Coffee and tea were available, and children’s workshops were also held. This dated glimpse shows the range of offerings at the time: from handicrafts and food to activities for children.
