Baťa architecture in Baťov, a protected oxbow of the Morava, and routes through the town offer different starting points for exploring Otrokovice. Rail connections also shape how you plan your trip. You can tailor your stay to whether you are more interested in the town’s history, nature or outdoor activities.

Rail connections as a planning consideration

Otrokovice railway station is a major terminal in the Zlínský kraj region. It is on line 330 of the II Railway Corridor between Břeclav and Přerov. The regional single-track line 331 from Zlín or Vizovice also terminates there. These lines offer a useful reference for planning your train journey; check the current timetable for your travel date, as schedules and services can change.

Baťa architecture and city history

In the Baťov district, two buildings designed by architect Vladimír Karfík offer different perspectives on architectural history. Obchodní dům Otrokovice, also known as Prior, is a Baťa building from the 1930s and is an example of Czech Functionalist architecture. The Společenský dům was also built to a design by Karfík. The three-winged building, completed in 1936, is considered an urban-planning and architectural landmark of Baťov and has been a protected monument since 2014.

The central park in front of the Společenský dům was part of the garden city plan. The green space, covering more than 2.5 hectares, separated the factory area from the social and residential areas, while also serving as the district’s recreational and functional centre. Baťa company employees spent their leisure time there. The layout of the building and park also illustrates the former connection between the working, residential and social areas.

Some Baťa houses, especially in Baťov, have survived in their original condition to this day, without extensions or thermal insulation. Another architectural landmark is the religious building on náměstí 3. května: built to a design by Mojmír Korvas, it was consecrated in 1995 and is considered a defining feature of the square and the town of Otrokovice. The architectural history thus ranges from the Functionalist department store and the design of the district to a 20th-century religious building.

Educational trail, circular routes and the Baťa Canal

The Naučná stezka Baťov educational trail is a 4.4-kilometre circular route with twelve stops about the history of Otrokovice. It follows paved paths through the town and can be used for walking, Nordic walking, running or cycling. The route length and number of stops may be updated, so check the latest local route information before setting off.

The Stezky Branou do Chřibů offer a different type of route. Their marked circular trails cover 22 kilometres, start at the Baťa Canal landing stage in Otrokovice and are also suitable for mountain bikes. While the educational trail passes through the town and focuses on the history of Otrokovice, choosing a route for a cycling or walking trip is key on these circular trails. Markings and trail conditions can change, so it is also a good idea to check the latest route information.

The Baťa Canal is navigable for recreational boating along 53 kilometres, from Otrokovice to Rohatec. If you are planning a trip involving boating, check navigation conditions and seasonal operations in advance.

Na letišti Natural Monument

The Přírodní památka Na letišti natural monument is located within the cadastral area of Otrokovice. It protects an oxbow of the Morava with aquatic flora and fauna. Rare species include the water caltrop, smooth newt, fire-bellied toad, common toad, green toad and common water frog; grey herons and kingfishers are also found there. For nature enthusiasts, the focus is on a protected aquatic habitat and the species that live there. Together with the town’s history and its various routes, this natural attraction offers another perspective on Otrokovice, without requiring the destinations to be combined into a fixed itinerary.
