A defining landmark of Biskupice is the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its history, several monuments and two cycling routes of different lengths give the town a clear profile for planning a trip: you can focus on cultural discoveries or combine a visit to Biskupice with a bike ride.

The chapel and historic places of remembrance

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was consecrated by Archbishop Jan Graubner on 16 August 1997. Every August, a pilgrimage takes place there around the Feast of the Assumption. The chapel is therefore both a prominent landmark and the setting for a recurring religious tradition.

The statue of the Virgin Mary is also associated with the chapel: the now-dissolved Association of Catholic Women had it erected in 1946; in 2001, it was moved to the open space in front of the chapel. Another religious statue, the Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, was commissioned by farmer Martin Vítek in 1796. It stands near the town centre on the bank of the stream. The two statues thus differ both in when they were made and in their recorded histories.

Several stone crosses commemorate other chapters in the town’s history. A cross erected in 1866 commemorates a cholera epidemic. An older cross, erected in 1752, was moved from the road to Velký Ořechov into a garden in 1932. The Liberation Monument stands on the main road: it was made and presented to the residents on 1 May 1946, the first anniversary of Biskupice’s liberation. It was later moved to its current location on the main road.

A further monument north of Biskupice commemorates the crew of a crashed aircraft. Romanian air gunner Gheorghe Popescu was killed; pilot Paul Lazaroiu was able to bail out by parachute. Together with the crosses and the Liberation Monument, this memorial site shows how the different memorials in and around Biskupice mark their respective historical events.

Fašank and open-air summer cinema

The local Fašank tradition includes a procession of costumed groups accompanied by music, as well as singing and dancing together. The custom has long been observed in Biskupice and is intended to be preserved for future generations. The masked participants are treated to doughnuts, pastries or meat; schnapps and beer are mentioned as the main drinks. Fašank thus brings together a procession and music with a specific form of local hospitality.

The open-air summer cinema offers a different kind of event. Its first edition took place in 2018; screenings are held on the grounds of TJ TATRAN’s football club. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the latest event dates before finalising your stay.

Cycling routes of different lengths

Two circular routes are described for cycling trips, differing in length and intended bicycle type. The Luhačovice–Biskupice circular route is 11 kilometres long and designated for road bikes. It leads to Biskupice and then to the local airfield. The Small Spa Circular Route is 22 kilometres long and intended for trekking bikes and mountain bikes. Its itinerary goes through Luhačovice and Biskupice, then continues to the airfield and on to Řetechov and Pozlovice. The two options can therefore be compared by their stated distances and bicycle types.

There is also a route from Ottovka along the right bank of the Luhačovický potok, following a cycle path to the edge of Biskupice. This route description offers further guidance without replacing the two circular routes. If you are planning your trip around cycling routes, you can therefore choose between the designated circular routes and this connection to the edge of town.
