Those interested in local architectural history and traditions that are still maintained will find concrete examples in Kaňovice: the Chapel of Panna Maria Prostřednice všech milostí, traditional events and the Hrabinova Farmstead. Historical crafts are presented there, and the farmstead has also received an award for its earth construction architecture. Geographically, Kaňovice lies on the northwestern edge of the Vizovické vrchy. This brings together a cultural focus and a clear location within the landscape.
On the edge of the Vizovické vrchy
Kaňovice lies on the northwestern edge of the Vizovické vrchy. The lowest point of the municipality is at 240 m above sea level, where the Černý potok leaves the area in the direction of Biskupice. This places two distinct geographical reference points side by side: the edge of the uplands and the stream at the boundary of the municipal area. The figure of 240 m refers to the lowest point, not to the general elevation of the entire village.
Architectural history and religious landmarks
The Chapel of Panna Maria Prostřednice všech milostí was built by residents in 1951–1952. Its cornerstone was blessed on 10 May 1951, and the shell of the building was completed within 14 days. These two dates refer to different stages in the building’s history: the blessing of the cornerstone and the completion of the shell.
A conservation area was designated in Kaňovice in 1994. The historic centre is also registered as an area with archaeological finds. The conservation area and the archaeological registration are two distinct heritage designations for the village. Crosses and wayside shrines can be found in the cemetery, by the chapel, and along the roads towards Seče, Biskupice and Velký Ořechov.
Traditions that are still maintained
Traditions that continue to be maintained include the masked carnival procession (fašankový průvod masek), the Easter “klepání” (velikonoční „klepání“), and raising and felling the maypole (stavění a kácení máje). The customs differ in form and occasion: a procession with masks, an Easter custom and the care of the maypole from its raising to its felling. If you would like to experience one of these events, check the specific dates before your trip.
Hrabinova Farmstead: crafts and earth construction
The Hrabinova Farmstead, also known as Rolnická usedlost č.p. 19, is used to present and teach traditional historical crafts. In 2011, it received an international award for exceptional earth construction architecture in Europe. This brings two distinct themes together at the same place: the teaching of historical crafts and the award-winning architecture. The award relates to the earth construction architecture, while teaching crafts is part of the farmstead’s function.
A notice dated 13 June 2025 mentions the option of arranging a personal visit to the renovated Hrabinova Farmstead in advance through the municipal office. Arrange your visit with the municipal office in advance.
