A sandstone cross dating from 1831 and the flooded Modrá voda quarry represent two distinct themes in Záhorovice: local history and landscape. Also nearby are the Kyselka spring and marked routes for cycling and hiking. If you are looking for accommodation in the town, you can plan your stay around these specific interests rather than treating Záhorovice simply as a place to spend the night.
The Olšava and Kyselka
Záhorovice lies in the Olšava catchment area; the river divides the town into two parts. The Olšava thus shapes the geographical setting on two levels: as a catchment area and as a line running through the settlement. The spring of Záhorovice Kyselka adds a local connection to water. It flows at a rate of 9 litres per minute and is used by local residents and people from the surrounding area.
Modrá voda and the routes
Modrá voda is a flooded quarry that formed after the local quarries closed. Tourists from nearby and farther afield visit it; camping is possible there. On the way to Modrá voda is the Studánka Kamínka spring, which was restored in 1998. The marked cycling route passes through Záhorovice; to the southeast, a green-marked hiking trail leads through the forest to Modrá voda. This distinguishes the route through the town from the forest connection to the quarry. Markings and trail conditions can change; check the information before setting out.
Monuments with their own histories
Záhorovice was first mentioned in writing in 1373. At the northeastern edge of the town is the plague cemetery, with approximately 65 graves of epidemic victims and a surviving sandstone cross dating from 1831. The plague cemetery, including the crucifix, was declared a cultural monument in 1994. The Boží muka in Záhorovice received this status in 1963.
The bell tower also reveals different periods: its present appearance, including the interior furnishings, dates from 1974, after a chapel at the upper end of the town had to be demolished. An image of Saint Bartholomew adorns the altar in the chapel inside the bell tower. The bell rings at 12 noon and 6 pm. The years mark different events: the first written record, the monument designations and the creation of the tower's present form.
Historic transport routes
The transport history includes the road between Uherský Brod and Bojkovice, completed in 1837, which runs through Záhorovice. A stop on the Vlárská dráha railway, the line from Brno to Trenčianská Teplá, was also established in the town; this line entered service on 4 October 1888. The road and railway represent different historical stages in the town's connections.
