Slavkov combines nature attractions with distinctive traces of local history and folklore-related activities. This makes the town interesting for anyone who wants to discover more than just one sight on their trip and get to know different facets of the region. When planning, you can consider nature exploration, an educational trail and cultural events as separate highlights.
Nature Reserves and Special Plants
Slavkov is located in the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. The Dolnoněmčanské louky Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Slavkov u Uherského Brodu and protects an area of scenic value with significant plant and animal communities. Each protected area has its own focus: the Porážky National Nature Reserve is the only site of robust lousewort in all of Central Europe. The Kolo Nature Reserve has species-rich wetland vegetation and a significant population of the flesh-coloured orchid. The highly endangered snake garlic occurs in Slavkovský háj.
Those interested in plants and habitats will find several distinct nature topics here: a special discovery site, wetland vegetation with orchids, and an endangered plant species. The Dolnoněmčanské louky Nature Reserve adds the protection of valuable plant and animal communities to this picture. This diversity gives nature around Slavkov its own distinctive focus, without all the protected areas offering the same things.
Educational Trail, Routes and Nature Excursions
The “Kronika slavkovské krajiny” educational trail has ten stops and starts in front of the Charitní dům sv. Petra a Pavla. Another way to explore the area is the Lucká hledačka, which comprises two routes jointly prepared by the town of Hluk and the municipalities of Slavkov and Dolní Němčí. Route A leads from Horní Němčí through Slavkov to Dolní Němčí. When comparing the routes, you can therefore choose according to their different formats: an educational trail with ten stops or one of the jointly prepared questing routes.
Guided visits to some protected areas are also possible from Slavkov. The ČSOP Pantoflíček organisation runs nature excursions several times a year on request for tourists and nature enthusiasts in the region. Requests are particularly frequent during the orchid flowering season, which varies from year to year. If you would like to plan a guided nature excursion, check whether a guide is available before your trip. A request is required for ČSOP Pantoflíček nature excursions.
Another excursion destination is the summit of Velká Javořina, which can be reached from Slavkov by bike and on foot. The Lucké pole memorial site can be reached from Slavkov via newly built cycle paths. As cycle paths and their conditions can change, check the current situation before setting off. This lets you combine an interest in nature with a specific choice of transport, without assuming that the same route applies to both destinations.
Local History and Folklore
A bell tower dating from 1927 stands in the centre of Slavkov. It was built on the site of an earlier wooden bell tower. Another historical trace leads to the Horní pole area, where a memorial pear tree more than 300 years old stands on the border between Horní Němčí and Slavkov. The Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area administration designated it a memorial tree in 2009. Together, the bell tower and the tree point to different forms of remembrance: a building in the town centre and a tree on a municipal boundary.
The landscape of Lucké pole is associated with an encounter between the troops of the Bohemian prince Vladislav I and the Hungarian king Štěpán II. Under unclear circumstances, a clash eventually took place; the exact location of the battle is uncertain. The landscape’s connection with this historical event adds another perspective to the nature and route offerings, without making it possible to pinpoint the exact site of the battle.
Folklorní den takes place in August every even-numbered year. The programme includes traditional costumes, folklore ensembles from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and a traditional crafts fair. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance. Nature, local history and folklore thus offer different reasons to consider Slavkov for a stay.
