Suchá Loz lies in the valley of the Bystřička stream. Foothills of the White Carpathians stretch along the southern side of the village; Suchá Loz also lies within the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Bílé Karpaty).

Landscape, Mineral Spring and Views

Horní Louky is home to unique flora, including Carpathian orchids known as “stavače.” The flora is seasonal and therefore not the same at every time of year. Pramen Slatina adds a special mineral spring to this natural setting: its water is carbonated and salty, with a high lithium content. The spring is easily accessible on foot, by bicycle and by car.

Near Suchá Loz, the U Křížku observation tower offers a semicircular view. To the northeast, it reaches Mikulčin vrch; to the east, Velký Lopeník; and to the southwest, Velká Javořina. To the southeast, part of the Považský Inovec in Slovakia is visible.

Cycling the Komenský Route

A cycling route named after Komenský runs from Uherský Brod via Nivnice and Suchá Loz to Bystřice pod Lopeníkem, Komňa and Bojkovice. The entire route is 34 kilometres long. It follows paved cycle paths, with a short section on farm and forest tracks.

Those who want to combine cycling with other interests can explore this route alongside the village’s natural and cultural attractions.

Buildings and Historical Landmarks

An old brick bell tower dating from the 19th century stands in the village square. The Velecký Mill dates from the 18th century. The 18th-century Velecký Mill is therefore older than the 19th-century bell tower in the village square. Together, a building in the square and the historic mill complement the natural and cycling attractions with a glimpse of architectural history.

Three other landmarks are distinguished by their dedications and dates. The site dedicated to Saint Roch is dated to 1886; a plague epidemic in the village ended that same year. A site in honour of Saints Peter and Paul is dated to the end of the 18th century, while one dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius dates from the 1860s.

Folk Customs and Traditional Costume

Folk customs have been preserved in Suchá Loz. These include the Kateřinská zábava celebration, with the custom of “právem žen” and the “o botu” contest. Various social events are also held at the Sucholožská chalupa, including Christmas, Easter and Sucholožské hody. Event dates vary. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the specific dates when planning.

At Berdina, you can try on the traditional Sucholožský kroj by arrangement. The experience includes putting on the individual layers of clothing step by step and tying a Turkish headscarf. The history and development of the costume are also explained during the fitting. Arrange this experience in advance; the individual steps and historical explanation offer a different way to engage with local tradition than visiting a building or an event.
