Stupava lies in the heart of the Chřiby, in a valley along the Stupavka stream. Densely forested slopes and extensive woodlands characterize the surrounding area. At the same time, the village connects this landscape with a distinct glassmaking tradition. This gives you two clearly defined areas to focus on when planning your trip: nature and trails on the one hand, and the history of the local glassworks on the other. Depending on which topic interests you more, Stupava may be considered primarily as a base for activities or as a destination for a cultural and historical stay.
Forest Landscape and Nature Reserve
The Stará Hráz Nature Reserve lies about 1.5 kilometres southeast of Stupava in the Kyjovka valley and covers 7.8 hectares. The landscape there includes hornbeam-oak forests on the right-hand valley slope as well as ash-alder floodplain forests in the floodplain of the meandering stream. The contrast between the valley slope and the floodplain helps define the forest landscape more precisely: it encompasses two distinct habitats within the same protected area. Together with the densely forested slopes and extensive woodlands nearby, this protected natural area shapes Stupava’s connection to the surrounding landscape.
Hiking and Cycling in the Chřiby
Stupava is a good starting point for hikes and bike rides. In the surrounding area, a green-marked hiking trail leads to the ruins of Cimburk Castle. The castle was originally Gothic and dates back to 1327. The trail offers a specific hiking destination nearby, while the description of Stupava also presents it as a base for both activities.
Cycling can also be viewed in a regional context. The “Most Beautiful Cycling Routes of Slovácko” feature presents the Chřiby, the White Carpathians and the Lednice-Valtice Area as three scenic cycling areas in the Slovácko region. Since Stupava lies in the heart of the Chřiby, this area is the natural reference point for the village’s location; the other two areas offer points of comparison within the region’s cycling options. This places the landscape around Stupava and other cycling areas of Slovácko within a shared regional overview.
Glassmaking Tradition and Local History
Local glass production at the glassworks ended after the floods of 1905. The Chřiby Glassmakers’ Museum in Stupava reopened with a new exhibition in 2025. The exhibition “In the Footsteps of the Chřiby Glassmakers” is located in Stupava’s cultural centre. Together, these provide the glassmaking tradition with both a historical and a museum reference point.
The church in Stupava was completed in 1859. This date marks a different point of reference from the history of the glassworks: it marks the completion of the church, while local glass production ended after the floods of 1905. The Stupava Ski and Activity Area has been in operation since 2001; this date adds a later point in time to the village’s history.
