Staré Hutě can be explored through several specific themes: In the deep valley of the Chřiby Hills, individual houses line both banks of the Kyjovka. A green KČT hiking trail and the Velkomoravská Pilgrimage Route also pass through the village. Together, these provide a way to navigate the river landscape, trails and local history. The surrounding area is home to preserved Carpathian beech forests, a plentiful spring and a sandstone rock formation; historical landmarks in the village recall its glassworks and crafts. This means you can choose different focuses for your stay, from nature and outdoor activities to culture.
Landscape and nature around Staré Hutě
The area around Staré Hutě is home to preserved Carpathian beech forests, which provide a habitat for numerous rare plant and animal species. The forests are also well known to mushroom pickers from the wider area. Hladná voda is another specific point of interest: the plentiful spring lies about two kilometres northeast of the village, near a hunting lodge of the same name. About 1.5 kilometres to the east, in the cadastral area of Staré Hutě and along the yellow-marked trail, lies Buchlovský kámen. The rock formation is a partly wooded, flat ridge with an isolated, twelve-metre-high sandstone rock. The spring, forest and rock represent different aspects of nature: water to the northeast, a distinctive rock to the east and a habitat that extends across the surrounding area.
Hiking trails and cycle routes
The green KČT hiking trail and the Velkomoravská Pilgrimage Route pass through Staré Hutě. The long-distance Jihlava–Český Těšín cycle route also runs through the village. Two other named routes offer a more specific comparison for planning: The “From the Baťa Canal Valley to the Chřiby Ridge” cycle route passes through Břestek, Staré Hutě and Buchlovice. The “A Walk in the Chřiby Hills: Past Břestecká skála, Buchlovský kámen and Buchlov Castle” hiking route runs from Břestek via Salaš and Staré Hutě to Buchlovice. Both routes include Břestek, Staré Hutě and Buchlovice; Salaš is also included on the hiking route. This lets you distinguish between a cycle route and a hiking route without treating their listed itineraries as identical.
Glassworks, chapel and crafts
Staré Hutě was established in connection with the founding of local glassworks at the beginning of the 18th century. A protected old small-leaved lime tree, designated as a memorial tree, stands on the former glassworks site. It links the village’s early history with a surviving memorial. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary dates from the second half of the 19th century. Toward the end of that century, Staré Hutě was known for making mother-of-pearl products. Together, these details illustrate different aspects of the village’s history: its origins in the glassworks, a religious building and a historic craft tradition.
A place to go horseback riding nearby
About one kilometre to the east lies the historic Zikmundův dvůr, also known as Zikmundov or Dvorek; horseback riding is available there. If you plan to go horseback riding, check availability before your trip.
