Střížovice lies on the right bank of the March, where the Hornomoravská Lowland meets the Chřiby Hills. The nearby Chřiby Hills can be seen from the village. The river landscape, protected nature, routes for different activities and village monuments offer a variety of ways to spend your time here. When planning, it is worth considering the walking and cycling options separately.
Protected Nature on the March
Bašnov is a protected natural monument in the cadastral area of Střížovice u Kvasic. It lies about 0.3 kilometres south-southeast of Střížovice, in a shallow depression in the March floodplain. It is protected as a habitat for the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), a species of European significance. This gives the nature theme a specific connection to a species and its habitat.
Another natural feature is the Střížovice Site of Community Importance. It lies about 0.7 kilometres southeast of Střížovice, on the left-hand side of the road from Střížovice to Kvasice, and is part of the Natura 2000 network. Bašnov and the site represent different forms of protection: one protects the fire-bellied toad’s habitat, while the other is a named site within Natura 2000.
Walking and Cycling
The Stezky severními Chřiby trail network is primarily intended for walking. Most routes are also suitable for mountain biking; this applies to most of the network, not necessarily every route. The trails are also suitable for running or Nordic walking. Information boards provide maps, historical information and details of local attractions. The trail network also includes tourist signposts, viewpoints and benches.
A 12-kilometre hiking trail starts in Střížovice. For cycling, the route section between Kroměříž, Střížovice and Kvasice is also of interest: it is part of the EuroVelo 9 system. The options differ according to the activity you prefer: the trail network is primarily designed for walking, while the EuroVelo 9 connection identifies a cycling route section. For mountain biking on the Stezky routes, the qualification is that most—but not necessarily all—are rideable.
Village History and Monuments
A monument to the people of Střížovice who fell in the First World War was erected in front of the municipal office in 1921. It provides a specific historical landmark in the village. The statue of Saint Florian stands in the village square. It is 276 centimetres tall overall and is believed to be a Baroque monument. It is a protected object, registered under number 34454/7–6157 in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments.
Kříž na Hrázi also reflects local religious tradition. The sandstone cross, with a crucifix and corpus, stands on a pedestal; it depicts the body of the martyred Christ and bears the inscription INRI. During the procession through the village, the Hrkači stopped here to pray. Together with the war memorial and the statue of Saint Florian, the cross offers another, distinct perspective on village history.
