An almond-shaped hand axe made of reddish-brown radiolarite takes us far back in time: it was found in the vicinity of Karolín and dates to the Middle Palaeolithic. The history of the place, however, cannot be viewed through archaeology alone. The founding of the settlement in 1822, a chapel, stone crosses, connections to the landscape and local culinary traditions offer further ways to explore during your stay. When planning your visit, you can decide whether local history, nature or culinary experiences will be your main focus.
Archaeological Traces and Local History
Evidence of human presence in the Karolín area dates back to the end of the Middle Palaeolithic and the Upper Palaeolithic. One specific find is an almond-shaped hand axe made of reddish-brown radiolarite, discovered in the vicinity of the village. Its shape and material make it a vivid point of reference for Karolín’s early archaeological history.
Karolín was founded as a settlement in 1822. The settlement was named Karolínov (Karolinendorf) after its founder. Evidence of human presence thus dates back long before the settlement’s recorded founding. The history of the place therefore spans very different periods: early archaeological traces and the beginning of the settlement in the 19th century.
Chapel and Stone Crosses
Local sights include two stone crosses. Karolín has a chapel dedicated to Saint Florian and the Virgin Mary, built before the end of the 19th century. The chapel and crosses complement the archaeological finds with a different kind of local heritage. While the hand axe makes early human presence tangible, the chapel and crosses serve as distinct local points of interest for a cultural-history stay.
Landscape and Walking
The southern part of Karolín’s cadastral area borders Chřiby Nature Park. The Panenský potok stream flows through the cadastral area. The surroundings of Karolín are suitable for walking. From one section of the Stezka severními Chřiby trail, you can see the White Carpathians, the Zlín Region and the surrounding area.
These features have different geographical contexts: the nature park boundary concerns the southern part of the cadastral area, the stream flows through the area, and the views are found along one section of the trail. Walks in the surrounding area offer a broader connection with nature; the distant views mentioned, by contrast, are specific to that section of the trail.
Local Culinary History
Karolín hosts the traditional slivovitz competition, or slivovitz tasting, “Karolín košt”, which focuses on finding the best slivovitz. Local tradition also tells how cherries from Karolín were transported by train to the Vienna market. These culinary connections are distinct: the košt is a named event tradition, while the story about the cherries recalls a historical trade route to Vienna. Local culinary history thus brings together a traditional tasting and a story about trade.
