Sulimov is a 971 m-long linear village. The difference in elevation between the upper and lower parts of the village is 66 m. At the top, the village opens out onto a village green, where the bell tower (Zvonice) stands. Together, these features offer a clear sense of the place: a long, narrow settlement with a distinctive square in its upper part.
Village character between the green and the hillside
Set into the hillside in the upper part of the village is the statue of Saint Anne (Socha svaté Anny). It was erected in 1944 and forms a prominent landmark. Another historic feature is Zapletalův kříž: the cross was erected above Sulimov in 1906 and is now located by a windbreak. In September 2016, it was fully renovated. This included a new replica of the figure and a new cross made of Hořice sandstone, with a figure of Christ.
Choose a hike by distance
The “Trails of the Northern Chřiby” network includes information boards, hiking signs, viewpoints and benches; in some places, it also features educational elements for children. As the trail infrastructure may change as the network develops, check the project map for current markings.
A short circular route runs for just under 5 km through Sulimov. Along the way, there are three viewpoints overlooking the Hostýnské vrchy and Vizovické vrchy. If you would like to plan a longer walk, there is a 10 km hiking trail connecting Sulimov, Lubná and Vrbka. It passes through interesting landscapes and offers viewpoints and forest paths; a detour to a burial mound site is possible. The main difference between the two routes is their length and course: a short circuit through Sulimov or a longer route connecting three villages.
Near Sulimov and Karolín, a viewpoint beside a windbreak also serves as a junction for local hiking trails. From there, views extend to the White Carpathians, the Zlín Region and the surrounding area along this section of the trail. Check route conditions before setting out.
Bell tower, customs and local history
The bell tower was built in the early 19th century. It underwent a complete renovation in 1933, and the last structural alteration was made in 1984. May devotions have been held at the tower again since 1997. If you would like to attend a particular service, check the specific dates before your trip.
Traditional clothing and language are also part of local history: folk costume was still worn in Sulimov around the turn of the 20th century, by women for the longest. Sulimov also has a Moravian-Slovak dialect. These details add aspects of everyday life in the past to the visible landmarks.
Slivovitz: historic distillery and annual tasting
In 1906, a distillery for making slivovitz was built at the lower end of the village, near St. Trinity. This historical connection does not mean that the distillery is currently open to the public. A recurring event in the local calendar today is the “Velký sulimovský košt slivovice,” held annually at the end of January in a pub. The tasting includes a competition for the best sample of the season. Check the specific event details before your trip.
Stay and bus planning
If you are considering Sulimov as a place to stay, you can plan your day around your preferred hiking distance: the circular route runs for just under 5 km through the village, while the 10 km trail connects Sulimov, Lubná and Vrbka. Residents use bus services to travel to Kroměříž, Kvasice, Otrokovice and Zlín. For specific journeys, please check the current routes and timetables.
