In Litenčice, a church with a remarkable number of historical details, the history of a castle, and the landscape of the Litenčická pahorkatina come together. This gives your trip several possible focuses: sacred architectural history in the town, regional cycling routes, or a look at the area’s distinctive geology.

Landscape and cycling routes

Litenčice is located amid the Litenčická pahorkatina. The rolling hills form the landscape setting for a network of signposted local cycling routes connecting municipalities and places of interest. Four circular routes cover a total of about 180 kilometres. This approximate total describes the entire route network, not a single tour, so when planning you can first choose between the individual circular routes.

The Velký Litenčický okruh runs through the centre of the Litenčická pahorkatina, connecting Vyškov in the western part of the region with Morkovice-Slížany in the east. This places the route description in a broader regional context. If you would rather focus on the town and its architectural history, the church and castle history offer a different focus from a cycling tour through the rolling hills.

Church, castle and monuments

The Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla church is one of Litenčice’s most important sights and dates from around 1700. Its four altars offer a tangible glimpse of its furnishings: the main altar is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. The last renovation took place between 1740 and 1760. The church grounds also contain a stone Baroque crucifix dating from 1757. Together, these details show different aspects of the complex: its use as a church, its renovation in the 18th century, and a dated detail of its Baroque furnishings.

The church itself is also listed as a cultural monument. Next to it stands the Jilm v Litenčicích elm, protected as a natural monument. The Kaple Panny Marie chapel is also part of the preserved group of monuments. If you enjoy looking at individual buildings and their historical details when travelling, these places offer a tangible reason to explore the local heritage.

Zámek Litenčice Castle is a two-storey, four-wing complex that originated as a Gothic fortress and was shaped by Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical alterations. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. An important point for planning: the castle is not open to the public. Its architecture and history therefore provide a cultural point of reference, but not an opportunity to visit the interior.

Wine history and distinctive geology

The castle’s connection with viticulture dates back at least to the 16th century: vineyards were already part of the castle estate then. There is also a Renaissance wine cellar beneath the castle. These historical references tell of an earlier wine tradition; they do not indicate that wine is currently produced or that the cellar is open to visitors.

Another special feature is the Litenčice geological site, a former sand quarry with Carpathian delta sands and numerous macrofaunal fragments. An unusual exposure in the sands and the nesting of European bee-eaters are among the features of this site, which is listed as recommended for protection. It is designated as a geotourism attraction and excursion site. However, access is only possible with special permission; the access restrictions relate to military land, a quarry or private property. Take this condition into account before planning a visit.

Choosing the right focus

To decide whether Litenčice is the right destination for you, the themes can easily be distinguished: the church and group of monuments represent the town’s cultural history, while the Litenčická pahorkatina offers landscapes and a regional cycling network. The geological site adds a distinctive nature and geology theme to these options, but because special permission is required, it should not be treated as a spontaneous excursion destination.

When searching for hotels in Litenčice, you can use these themes as a guide and then check offers for your travel dates. Litenčice is described as a transport hub: a second-class road from Prostějov to Kyjov meets a third-class road between Kroměříž and Litenčice here. Check the current route and road classification before setting out.
