The castle ruins, places of remembrance and traces of ironworking give Perštejn a distinctive cultural and historical character. In addition, a 46-kilometre section of the Ohře Cycle Route passes through the town. Cultural history and cycling are two separate highlights: you can visit Perštejn for its cultural history or plan it as a stop on a cycling stage.
Castle Ruins on a Rocky Spur
Perštejn Castle Ruins stand on a steep rocky spur above the village of Perštejn. In places, the masonry has survived almost at its original height. The position above the village and the preserved sections of masonry show two different aspects of the same structure: its striking location and its historic fabric.
From the turn-off to Údolíčko, a blue-marked route leads to the nature trail near the castle. Trail conditions may vary; check the route’s condition if you plan to take this path.
Church and Memorial to Vanished Communities
The reconstructed Church of St. Vendelín houses an exhibition about the vanished communities of the Chomutov District. At the memorial to the vanished communities, each stone in the circle is dedicated to a vanished community.
The memorial is almost four metres tall. A cross set in a solar wheel, one metre in diameter, sits atop a slender pillar. The cross is an enlarged replica of a reconciliation cross that stood near the vanished village of Vrchnice in the Chomutov District. The exhibition focuses on the vanished communities of the entire district; the replica, in turn, establishes a specific connection to Vrchnice. In this way, remembrance of several communities sits alongside remembrance of one individual vanished village.
Ironworking in the Town’s History
The first iron hammers in this area are known to date back to 1352. Perštejn had a hammer mill in 1540 and, in addition, a blast furnace in 1577. The timeline thus runs from early iron hammers in the region to two later installations in the town.
Cycling Route and Getting There
The section of the Ohře Cycle Route through Perštejn is 46 kilometres long and rated as moderate to moderately challenging. The stage length indicates the distance, while the rating indicates its difficulty; both are relevant when planning. The surface and signage may change; check conditions before setting off.
Perštejn railway station is about one kilometre from the village. If you are planning to travel by train, check the connections separately. This lets you consider the station’s location and the timetable as two separate parts of your travel plans.
Seasonal Rental at the Swimming Pool
At the swimming pool in Perštejn, parasols, sun loungers, table tennis sets and Russian skittles can be rented when the pool is open or when accommodation staff are present. The offer is seasonal and may change; check before your visit whether rentals will be available at your desired time.
