Žim combines medieval village history with the parish Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross and paths into the open countryside. Field and forest paths connect to the settled part of the municipality; a marked cycle route also passes through the village. In Záhoří, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary and the Záhořský Pond provide additional local points of interest.
Village history and church
Žim is a medieval village, originally Slavic, on an important historic road crossing the Bohemian Central Highlands. The village is first mentioned in written records in papal tithe registers from 1352 to 1391. A historic route ran through Žim, crossing the Bohemian Central Highlands near Milešov and continuing towards Velemín and Lovosice. The village’s history can therefore be explored both through its early written record and through the historic connections across the landscape described here.
The parish Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross is documented from 1357. Originally built in the Gothic style, it was remodelled in the Renaissance style in the 16th century; the nave was extended in 1699. Its construction history thus spans several phases, from its medieval origins to the extension at the end of the 17th century. Regular services are not held in the church, and it is not accessible to people with disabilities.
Landscape and paths
The southern two-thirds of Žim’s territory lie within the protection zone of the supraregional “Stříbrný roh – Milešovka” biocorridor. The supraregional Milešovka biocentre is numbered 17 and largely follows the municipality’s southern boundary; only small extensions reach into its territory.
The open countryside can be reached via field and forest paths that connect to the settled part of the municipality. This describes the transition from the village into the surrounding landscape. For cycling, marked route 3009 passes through Žim and connects east of the village, near Radejčín, with route 3091. Field and forest paths provide access to the open countryside; cycle route 3009 connects east of the village, near Radejčín, with route 3091. Railway line 097 between Lovosice and Teplice v Čechách also passes through Žim.
Chapel and Záhořský Pond
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary in Záhoří is located in Žim. Regular services are not held there, and the chapel is not accessible to people with disabilities. A 2019 publication reports on work carried out in 2017 and 2018: the area around the chapel was landscaped alongside a newly reconstructed road, and the access to the water was reinforced with gravel.
At Záhořský Pond in Žim-Záhoří, people without permanent residence are permitted to fish seasonally from 1 March to 31 December. Check the current regulations before fishing, as seasonal rules may change. A 2019 conference paper also reports that the pond was used for swimming on hot summer days. Check locally whether swimming is currently permitted and possible.
