Muschelberg (Mikulov) brings winter sports and mining history together in one place. Six downhill runs and cross-country ski trails define the winter; in summer, marked walking trails and cycling in the Sport Centrum Bouřňák area are additional options. The church, tunnel and railway line offer another perspective on the town’s history. When planning your trip, the first question is whether skiing, outdoor activities or cultural history should be the main focus.
Winter at Bouřňák, trails in summer
The local ski area has six downhill runs as well as cross-country ski trails. Two ski lifts lead from Mikulov up to Bouřňák. This means downhill skiing and cross-country skiing are available as different options in winter. The Sport Centrum Bouřňák ski area is located within the municipalities of Mikulov, Nové Město and Moldava in the Ore Mountains.
In summer, the Sport Centrum Bouřňák area has marked trails for walking. The Krušnohorská magistrála can also be used for cycling there. The seasonal focus is therefore clear: in winter, the runs and trails take centre stage, while in the summer months, walking and cycling do.
Mining and cultural monuments
The Lehnschafter adit is one of the oldest parts of the mine in Mikulov. Visitors can choose from three prepared underground tours, each lasting one to two hours. This timeframe helps you plan the visit into your day.
The mining settlement of Neu Schellenberg was probably located in the area of present-day Mikulov as early as the beginning of the 15th century, in 1404 and 1410. The parish church of Saint Nicholas, Bishop, also bears witness to earlier building phases: it was built at the beginning of the 18th century on the foundations of an older, damaged church. The late Baroque religious building has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 6 June 2002.
The Mikulovský Tunnel is also a cultural monument. The Most–Moldava railway line also passes through Mikulov; since 1998, this section has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The church, tunnel and railway line each highlight a different aspect: religious architecture, mining and the history of a railway connection.
Viewpoint and more trails
Near Mikulov, Vlčí kámen is a viewpoint overlooking the valley. The hiking route from Mikulov starts at the car park below the ski slope. This gives the hike a clearly named starting point.
In the wider region, the cross-border Rehefeld/Moldava educational trail adds to the local options. Its 16 information panels cover the history and nature of the two municipalities in the Czech-German border area. You can start the trail at any point and walk it in either direction. This makes planning the route different from the hike to Vlčí kámen, which starts at the car park below the ski slope: on the educational trail, both the starting point and direction are flexible.
