Moldava combines a striking church building with an 18-kilometre educational trail to former glassworks and the varied landscape of the Ore Mountains. There are several themes to choose from when planning your visit: architectural history, glass, nature and—depending on the season—winter sports. This lets you tailor your stay to whichever focus interests you most.

Church, Cemetery and Cultural Monument

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (Navštívení Panny Marie) is a rectangular, single-nave building. Its distinctive prismatic tower has a shingle roof, and its furnishings are pseudo-Baroque. Its construction history includes a renovation in 1687 and an extension in 1851. The timeline thus runs from the 17th-century renovation to the 19th-century extension.

Regular services are held on Sundays. Check the current arrangements before your visit. The cemetery in Moldava, like the church, is a protected monument. It contains mainly wooden crosses and tombstones from the 19th century.

Another point of cultural and historical interest is the Louka u Litvínova–Moldava v Krušných horách railway section, which has been a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since July 1998.

Glassmaking History Along the Educational Trail

The Naučná sklářská stezka (Glassmaking Educational Trail) draws attention to former medieval glassworks. The 18-kilometre route forms a loop around Moldava and Nové Město, passing these historic sites. Glassmaking history is therefore not only the subject of the trail but is also reflected in its route.

Information boards are in Czech and German, and the trail also has its own tourist trail markers. It starts in upper Moldava, at the monument to František Koubek near the petrol station. Its length, loop format and bilingual boards give you concrete points of reference for deciding whether this route suits your interests.

Ore Mountains Landscape and Nature

Moldava extends across the summit areas of the Ore Mountains, the plains of Nové Město and the valley of the Mulda’s source. The landscape is therefore not limited to a single elevation. Natural habitats include peat bogs and former hay meadows rich in species, where numerous rare and declining plants continue to grow.

In the higher elevations of the Ore Mountains, a mosaic landscape of peat bogs, meadows and young replacement plantings provides breeding habitat for the highly endangered black grouse. The Východní Krušné hory Special Protection Area protects the black grouse population and its habitat and also extends across the cadastral area of Moldava.

Buky na Bouřňáku is a remnant of an old beech forest with flag-shaped crowns. The stand lies on the western slope of Bouřňák, 400 metres southeast of Nové Město near Moldava. Climatic influences have shaped the beeches into interesting forms.

Seasonal Sports Options

The 2023–2024 annual report lists a ski area at Sport Centrum Bouřňák with six downhill runs of varying difficulty and several kilometres of cross-country ski trails. The report also mentions marked hiking and cycling routes through forests and meadows. Sport Centrum is located in the cadastral areas of Mikulov and Moldava. The activities described differ by type: downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and marked hiking and cycling. Check seasonal conditions before travelling.
