Industrial history, architectural traces and views of distinctive mountains give Újezdeček several sides. In the town, signs of mining and glassmaking meet old farmsteads, stone walls and plans to preserve the Dukla settlement. For a break outdoors, you can take walks on reclaimed former spoil heaps; Milešovka and Kletečná can be seen from the village square.
Mining, glass and settlement history
Újezdeček was formerly called Malý Újezd. In 1880, lignite mining developed in the cadastral area. Mining and glassmaking led to a sharp rise in the population in the second half of the 19th century. The year marks the development of lignite mining; the population increase belongs to the broader period of the second half of the century.
The glass industry comprised two clearly distinct businesses: the Fischman glassworks produced bottle glass and costume jewellery glass, while the Ascher glassworks produced flat glass. Both factories later closed. Their different products give a tangible sense of the range of glass production formerly found in Újezdeček.
The Dukla settlement is another part of the town’s history. The land-use plan provides for preserving it as an integral part of the municipality’s history and as a residential complex of urban-planning value, with a central square. Alongside the former industries, attention is therefore also given to the character of the residential complex and the square as part of the settlement.
The architectural character of Újezdeček includes remnants of old farmsteads, old stone walls on buildings and renovated entrance gates. These details add an architectural dimension to the town’s history, alongside mining, glassmaking and the planned preservation of Dukla.
The monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars stands on Boženy Němcové Square. It adds a dedicated place of remembrance to the architectural and economic themes.
Walks, views and excursions
Nature walks are possible on reclaimed former spoil heaps. This allows Újezdeček to connect its mining history with a landscape that also invites visitors to go walking. Újezdeček also offers views of the Ore Mountains.
From the village square, you can see Mount Milešovka and the more distant Mount Kletečná. The view from the square thus offers two specific landmarks: Milešovka and the more distant Kletečná.
Excursions towards Kamenný pahorek are possible. Lake Barbora lies near Kamenný pahorek in the surroundings of Újezdeček and is used for diving. The nature activities therefore differ: walks are possible on the reclaimed spoil heaps, while Barbora is associated with diving. Check the current access conditions before planning a dive.
Connections to Teplice
The character of the settlement in Újezdeček was shaped by mining and its direct connection to Teplice, particularly in terms of public infrastructure. Újezdeček is connected to Teplice’s urban public transport network. Check current services before travelling so you can plan accordingly.
