Rtyně Nad Bílinou reveals several historical layers: the 17th-century Baroque Church of St. Martin, the fortification site on Chotyně and a precisely dated event at the cemetery. The Rtyňské slavnosti also form part of this picture, though as events scheduled for specific dates. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the church’s architectural history, the uncertain interpretation of the older site and the commemoration of the prisoners.

St. Martin: architecture in a clear form

The Church of St. Martin is a single-nave Baroque church with a recessed presbytery and dates from the second half of the 17th century. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave; the term thus makes the building’s basic layout clear. The presbytery is the choir or altar area. Its recessed position describes where it lies in relation to the nave. Together, the architectural form and date connect the Baroque period with a specific spatial arrangement. Those interested in architecture can classify the church using these two features, rather than considering it simply a Baroque building in general terms.

Chotyně: landscape and historical context

The Paradies site lies on Chotyně Hill, south of Rtyně Nad Bílinou. It is classified as a castle or hillfort site dating to the 15th century; the remains are associated with Paradies Castle, which was probably built in the early 15th century. The identification of the remains as Paradies Castle remains a cautious historical interpretation. Traces in the terrain of the original structures and a ditch on the south side of the hill are visible at the site. How clearly these traces stand out can vary with the vegetation. Unlike the firmly dated Church of St. Martin, this site combines an earlier period with a less certain historical interpretation.

Commemoration of the prisoners

On 16 April 1945, 16 Jewish female prisoners were buried at the cemetery in Rtyně Nad Bílinou. The date, number and location mark a specific historical event. The cemetery relates to a different historical layer from the medieval fortification and the Baroque church. Alongside architecture and older history, local history thus also includes a commemoration of the prisoners tied to a precise location.

The Rtyňské slavnosti over time

The Rtyňské slavnosti can be placed in chronological context through three editions. In 2023, the 20th edition was held as an anniversary event marking the municipality’s 690th anniversary, from 1333 to 2023; the festivities had been paused for three years beforehand. The 21st edition was scheduled for Saturday, 29 June 2024. The 22nd Rtyňské slavnosti were scheduled for Saturday, 27 June 2026. In this sequence, the anniversary event held in 2023 sits alongside the dates scheduled for 2024 and 2026. If you plan to travel for a future edition, check its specific date before making plans.
