Labská Stráň brings together the Belvedér viewpoint and a distinctive history of sandstone and settlement. From the rocky terrace, the view stretches across the Elbe Canyon, Dolní Žleb, the table mountains Zirkelstein and Kaiserkrone, the Schrammsteine and Großer Winterberg. There is also a red-marked hiking trail to Belvedér and a 30-kilometre cycling loop through Labská Stráň. The landscape, architectural history and two different ways of getting around are therefore key themes when choosing a travel destination.

Belvedér: Views and Architecture

Belvedér is located in the municipality of Labská Stráň. Its tiered sandstone terrace includes a Sala terrena, a high arcade and the coat of arms of the Clary-Aldringen family. The site was created during the early Romantic period of tourism. The viewpoint is therefore of interest not only for its panorama: its design combines tiered sandstone with named architectural features. The site offers a concrete example of how viewpoints and tourist architecture came together during this early period.

Belvedér can be reached from Labská Stráň via a red-marked hiking trail. The trail leads to the viewpoint; the cycling loop, by contrast, runs through the village and includes it in a circuit with Markvartice and Růžová. These are different ways to plan an outing: a hiking trail to a specific destination and a named cycling loop through several places. If you are choosing your stay based on specific activities, you can take this distinction into account when planning your trip.

Settlement and Archaeological History

The beginnings of settlement are believed to be connected with medieval colonisation. The first reliable written mention of Labská Stráň, however, dates from 1614. This identifies two different points in time: a presumed early settlement and a reliable written reference. The year 1614 should therefore not be equated with the possible beginning of settlement.

The archaeological find area lies within the municipalities and cadastral areas of Hřensko and Labská Stráň. In Labská Stráň, the built-up area and rocks on the western and southwestern sides are among the areas recorded. Archaeological finds have been documented or can reasonably be expected within the find area. The archaeological perspective therefore encompasses both the settlement area and rocky areas, as well as possible or already documented finds.

Sandstone: From Viewpoint to Quarrying

The Comiteebruch and Elbleiten Comitte quarry complex offers another perspective on the history of sandstone. It lies in the upper part of the canyon, below the terrace with the municipal quarries of Labská Stráň. The complex illustrates sandstone quarrying in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Belvedér and the quarries therefore represent different historical themes: the early Romantic period of tourism on the one hand, and sandstone extraction on the other. Together, alongside the panorama and architecture, they add an industrial dimension to the history of the place.

The Cycling Loop Through Labská Stráň

For cyclists, the Markvartice–Růžová–Labská Stráň–Markvartice loop runs through the village. The basic route is 30 kilometres long. This specific route length helps you see the loop as a distinct focus when planning your trip and distinguish it from the hike to Belvedér. Check current route conditions before riding. When choosing accommodation in Labská Stráň, you can consider whether the viewpoint and its architecture or the cycling loop better suits your travel plans.
