Janská offers a range of reasons to stay: in Rabštejn, the history of the former camp and the underground facilities take centre stage, while the Rabštejnské údolí invites you to walk and cycle. There are also farmers’ and flea markets, as well as an open-air cinema in summer. If you are looking for an apartment in Janská, you can first decide whether your stay will focus on cultural history, time in the valley or an event. If travelling by train to the underground complex, you should also allow for a 1 km walk.
Rabštejn: Remembrance and Underground History
An external camp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp was established in the Kamenice Valley in 1944. At the site of the former Rabštejn camp, the ruins of the barracks’ foundations and preserved foundations of the SS guardhouse remain. A memorial at the former site features a monument bearing the inscription “OBĚTEM FAŠISMU 1939-1945”.
Between August 1944 and April 1945, prisoners excavated about 17,500 m² of underground space in the rock massif of the Kamenice Valley. After being closed for sixty years, part of Rabštejn’s underground facilities is once again open to the public; it currently houses an exhibition on Rabštejn’s past. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit.
Getting to the Underground Complex
If travelling by train to the Rabštejn underground complex, the route goes via “Veselé pod Rabštejnem” station; from there, it is a 1 km walk. Allow for this walk when planning your journey, and check train connections before setting off. The station details and walking distance provide a specific indication of how to get there, without specifying a walking time.
The Rabštejnské údolí and Special Nature
The Rabštejnské údolí is suitable for walking and cycling and extends across the cadastral areas of Česká Kamenice and Janská. If you would like to make time for exercise alongside the historical sites, there are two specifically mentioned options here: walking or cycling.
Near Filipov, a small eastern part of the Maiberg Nature Reserve extends into the cadastral area of Janská. Sojčí rokle is a valuable geomorphological sandstone gorge formation. It is home to a significant population of the mysterious bristle fern (Trichomanes speciosum). The nature experiences here are quite distinct: the valley is suited to walking and cycling, while Maiberg and Sojčí rokle are characterised by their nature reserve status and by the gorge formation and plant species found there, respectively.
Plan for Markets and the Open-Air Cinema
Farmers’ and flea markets are held in Janská on the third Saturday of every month; individual dates may change. The municipality of Janská also runs an open-air cinema. Check the specific market dates and the cinema programme before your trip. The markets provide a monthly guide when choosing your dates, while the cinema screenings can only be considered in relation to your planned stay.
There are several different options to focus on when planning your trip: the history and exhibition in Rabštejn, walking or cycling in the valley, or events in the village. If you are looking for an apartment in Janská, it may be helpful to first decide which of these interests will shape your trip. When visiting the underground complex, also take visiting arrangements and the walk from the station into account; for events, the specific date is key.
